No accelleration after re-fuel

Post by cb750K2 »

Hello everybody. I don't post much, only a couple of times. More of a lurker but a lover of my 05 Vibe. Tonight I went to purchase a Power-ball ticket and decided that since I was down to a 1/4 of a tank that I'd get $20 in gas while I was there. This was a late adventure that was supposed to be very quick. Not the case. The Vibe has been running great since I purchased it almost two years ago. Even on the way to the gas station tonight - no problems what soever. So I turn the car off, put in the $20 in gas, go pay and purchase my winning 200 mil. power-ball (hopefull) then return to my Vibe dreaming about the Nissan GT-R that I'll be purchasing with my winnings. Turn the key, the idle shoots up expectedly only this time the Check Engine light is on (arrgg). So I put it in to gear and it is like the gas pedal is unresponsive to my input. The tach stays at idle speed. The car moves but at a snails pace as if it is just the idle that is propelling the car forward. This is an automatic if that helps. The idle at this point (in park only) is erratic and causing the car to stall. I park. Groan, open the hood (protocol for a broken car right?), then do nothing since I really don't know what to do. I run in, call a tow-truck, sit and wait for 20 min and decide that it is time to try to start it again because at this point I am freezing. 10 deg. here in Minnesota to be exact. Starts up perfectly and idles fine. I go in call the tow truck to cancel and drive towards home. I drive about 3 miles with great results and then suddenly it starts to die. Luckily I was by another station so I pulled in there and called the towing company. When the idle was hunting and whatever there was a clicking coming from my dash. I don't know a better way of describing it. Any ideas? Is my computer shot? Is this just some weird short that will cost me a fortune to figure out? Any Ideas?? I haven't had a chance to pull the code yet since it is one in the morning here but I thought I'd try all of you anyways. Sorry for all the words. Thanks. C.

that sucks, but it could be the gas you put in. see this post for some options on getting this taken care of: http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=32236

You got bad gas, same thing I'm going through with my wife's car. Call the shop and have them get a sample of gas from the tank for testing. You're going to have to find out which govt. agency in Minn takes care of fuel quality standards and file a complaint. In my case, it's the Dept. of Agriculture and Markets in NY. Your car insurance should cover the repairs.

Sounds like a case of bad gas to me.

When my PCM died just recently, one of the symptoms -- once I was able to get it to start -- was an inability to accelerate. Car seemed nearly unresponsive to the accelerator. Other symptoms were: a complete failure to start unless the engine was completely cold, extremely harsh engagement into drive from park, and a CEL.My problem also happened right after refueling. But, once the computer was replaced, it ran fine for the rest of that same tank of gas.

Sounds like more than bad gas to me. You said it acted up when you started it. The gas you put in won't get to the engine immediately and as you stated, it ran fine on the restart, then started running bad after 3 miles or so. Again, I don't think it is bad gas but does sound like a trip to the shop/dealer is on the horizon. Keep us posted and good luck.

Well, I got up this morn and biked up to the shop that I had it towed to last night. Not open on Sunday. Damn. Tried it again and it ran fine again so I drove it up to the Checker Auto by me and used their code reader. The only code was P0606 which is PCM/ECM failure. My car only has 55k miles so this should be covered under the Federal Emissions Warranty. I hope it is. I'll keep you posted. Pretty sure this isn't a gas issue because it is so intermittent. It runs great when it runs great. In my experience bad gas would be at least rough almost all the time.

I looked at my invoice from my repair and it was CEL code of P0607. I think all of the P060x codes are internal PCM related faults; so with very similar symptoms and a similar code, I would think it's almost certainly the PCM. Especially since there is a TSB (05-06-04-074A) on basically the symptoms you describe.(I found some other talk about it here: http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=20634).

It was the PCM and it was under warranty to 80,000 miles. Got it back from the dealer tonight and it seems to be running great. Thanks for all of the genvibers input.

Aren't you glad it wasn't bad gas.
