For years I have always seen Canadian prices higher than US prices. For the first time since 1976, the Canadian dollar now equals the US dollar.I wonder if Canadian Vibe prices will now be the same as American Vibe prices?http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/070920/dollar.html

Wow the dollor is the same eh? thats either a good thing for canadians or a bad thing for americans. But it doesn't change the fact that a $16,000 car in the US costs a canadian about $24,000 for the same damn thing.

And it won't change any time soon. It's the manufactuer's that decide that, and it's only based loosly on the conversion rate. There's other things to consider in that equation as well (IE shipping, safety regs, etc.). I'd doubt if the dollar actually came into play any sooner than 2 model years down the road, if at all. Even 20 years ago when the dollar was stronger (not as strong as it is now, mind you) the price differece on cars, books, electronics, etc. was well over the dollar differecnce.
I never thought I'd see our dollar at par again and it happened very quickly. It's time for a trip to Ogdensburg, NY. to cash in on the deals. Maybe an Ebay spending spree to celebrate!
In part due to the Fed's 50 basis point rate cut on Tuesday. I'm not sure that was a good idea, it is inflationary, and commodity prices are already at recent highs. If OPEC drops the dollar as a peg for oil prices, could be a bad thing for the US economy. In the meantime, all you Canadians come on down for vacation, have a great time and spend your loonies - we need your money!

I just spent the weekend in North Conway New Hampshire, shopping like mad. I spent $400 (the exemption limit for crossing back to Canada). It was great - I got a $190 jewellry box from the Bombay Company for $55! And no sales tax! Good times!

yup, spending spree in syracuse last week!plus i saw a few items drop in price in canada due to this change so i jumped on those too!glad i no longer work for my last company...large export required and with the dollar this high, i know they'll be struggling to be competitive these days!(so it's not good for ALL canadians!)
I have signatures turned off so I'm not even sure what mine says in this space!
Actually, a stronger Canadian dollar may benefit Americans more than Canadians. The balanced dollar may encourage Canagians to vacation to American destinations given the relative cheapness (compared to historical). More tourism dollars may mean a boost to local economies...
