Odometer limit=299,999 !!!

Post by olympic »

I own a fleet of 8 taxis including 3 Vibes, an 03 and two 04's. I thought some of you might find it interesting to know that the odometer on these cars stops dead at 299,999. I'm in Canada so of course that's in kilometers and is approximately 186k miles. I was driving my 03 a few days ago and was watching the odometer because it was about to turn over 300k but it never did. I know nothing is broken because the trip odometers still work fine. I find it hard to fathom why GM/Toyota did this, did they not think any Vibe would make it this far? Mine still runs perfectly, I havn't even touched the drivetrain or suspension yet. I'm fully expecting to get 500-600k out of it.I could live with the 2 not switching to a 3 if the other 5 digits kept turning. Atleast I'd still have an odometer to know when to do maintenance. Using the trip odometers is a lost cause because surely some of my drivers will reset them at random times. I'll probably just switch to time-based oil changes because the car does 10k/month pretty consistantly and then I'll keep a "guesstimate" of the current odometer in my repair log book. A couple (poor) pics of this car:I know some of you might be interested in my maintenance routine so here it is. Everything is in km but just multiply by 0.62 for miles.oil/filter: 10,000km Esso XD3 0w30 synthetic/Napa Gold 1396air filter: 50,000km genuine GM(Denso)trans: drain/fill 50,000km Amsoil ATF with external filter and aux. coolerPS: 100,000km Amsoil ATFBrake fluid: 100,000km DOT 3(whatever is cheapest)Coolant: 200,000km DexcoolPlugs, belt, rear brakes: 200,000km genuine GMFront brakes: 70,000km genuine GMStuff that has broken or worn out:-catalytic converter(never replaced it but CE light is on)-drivers side power window switches-MANY door travel limiters. I finally made my own out of an old seatbelt and it works great.-both front passenger door hinges-rear passenger door handle-heater motor-pretty much all the plastic under panels have been ripped off from snow, ice and road debris. All in all though I'm very impressed. Vibes are well built and take a daily beating with ease. Most of the stuff I listed above is from outright abuse by passengers and drivers. I've owned many other types of cars and none would have made it htis far with so few repairs. I'll probably continue buying Vibes as long as they are produced.

Yeah, I found that out when I did a cluster swap to get an 04 cluster in my 03. Afterwards, I ran the 03 cluster up, thinking if I rolled it over then it would be of more use to someone, but I saw the exact same thing. (link) Trip meters increment, but odo locked at 299,999. If you are bothered by it, you could send the cluster off to somewhere to get the odometer reprogrammed, the last time I checked it would cost ~$100US, so I'm not sure if it's worth it. You can pull the trip meter reset button out, that might discourage drivers from hitting it, and you'd just need to use a pencil or something similar to reach in and hit the button. The trip meter will only count up to 9,999.9 and then it will roll over. That certainly is a lot of km's, good to know that they are still running ok. I question your use of Dexcool though, I've seen enough bad about that stuff that I'll be sure it never gets in my car.

Olympic, thanks for the maintenance sked on your amazing Vibe(s). Mine is just passing 1,000 miles and I'm looking forward to the next 185,000+.I've had mostly big cars and trucks for 30 years and am continually, pleasantly, surprised by the good road feel and spunky drivetrain of my Vibe.Great Car GM/Toyota/Pontiac, thanks

299,999 only? I have never heard of this but believe you...Wonder if the computer still reads higher or can you clear the mileage with the Tech II and start over... I doubt it since it is Toyota but still wonder. Congrats on reaching the limit! Maintenance is key for sure with any vehicle! When I turned 100,000 with my 1987 Cavalier RS I called the Chevy Customer Assistance Center and got a 100,000 miler T-shirt form them! LOL!!!

Any chance that we can get a shot of the 299,999? I would like to see that!

You could try installing a hubodometer. I found this one on the Internet that looks like it could be a good application for you. Most hubodometers are for large rigs and wil not fit well on the Vibe. Where are you in Saskatchewan?http://www.electrohub.co.za/about.htm

I'll get a shot of the odometer later today.joatmon, I still need the trip odometer, my cars don't have meters because we charge a flat rate within city limits and per km out of town. I think I'll put a note on the speedometer not to reset "trip B", the drivers can still use "trip A" for whatever they need. But I can almost guarantee "trip B" will get reset accidently at some point.I've heard all the Dexcool horror stories as well but never had a problem with it. I just retired an 01 Montana with over 600,000km, it still had the factory water pump, radiator and head gaskets in it. Regardless, if the nearest Toytota dealership wasn't 100 miles away I'd consider using the Toyota coolant.RexB, Good luck with your Vibe! Treat it well and it'll probably outlast you...lol! These cars literally saved my business. The excellent fuel mileage and low maintenance costs really helped my bottom line. The fuel savings alone are enough to make the monthly payment so in reality, I traded up to a new vehicle for free! MiVibe, That's a thought, I may call GM and see if there's anything they can do. I highly doubt it though and my local GM dealership seems rather clueless when it comes to these cars. Vibe-04, I live in a small town called Melville, 30 minutes south of Yorkton(if that helps)

How about getting one of those scangauges? Not only could you clear the CEL, but the trip computer could be useful for the drivers, freeing up the dash trip meters for odometer duty (or you could hide it and use it to keep track of the kms and also the drivers' max RPMs, KPH, etc)

Here ya go:I talked with the service supervisor at the GM dealership and he's going to check if there are any bulletins on this issue. They're also going to scan the OBD to see is there is anything they can do in there.

Very cool! I hate hearing that you'll probably be stuck with some expense on getting your clusters repaired, but at least the cars still run. It could be worse, it could have been something like my old car and quit working way sooner.. I recall my '90 Olds Cutlass Supreme hit 199,999 km and its digital odometer flipped to 'Error'. Fortunately, I didn't have it when it hit 199,999 mi so it wasn't my problem since it still was kickin' on the english setting. lol! Wonder why they didn't make that leading digit an '8' in the Vibe's cluster so they could create all possible digits and have 999,999 mi/km anyway? That's kinda strange.

I talked to the dealer and the only solution they have is to replace the cluster for $650+labor...lol!The first digit likely is an "8" since it has to display a "1" and a "2" anyways, so the limitation is in the electronics that run the odometer. Some overpaid bean-counter probably figured it out that they'd save 5 cents/Vibe by doing this.

It would be very possible to create an "auxilliary" odometer that would count mileage using input from the speed sensor, and could be set to a known starting value (like 299,999 or 300,245 or whatever). However, I'm quite sure this wouldn't be a money-making venture.

Olympic, I posted about your taxi Vibe!!! I saw you out in the Crooked Lake area back in 2003 ... http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=4880Now I have proof that I wasn't going crazy.Anyway, I'm glad to see that you're kicking my (removed) in the mileage department. I can't believe that the car won't go past 299,999 km on the odometer. Very strange considering all those Toyota commercials with the owners with 500,000 + km on their cars.

Yep, that would have been my car, could have been me driving too!! We go down there every so often taking people to parties at the lake or into the reserve. My town is about 60km to the north. As you can see in the pic in the first post, all my cars have the sticker on the rear window with my company name and phone number, but it's easy to miss if we passed on the hiway going opposite directions. My town has only 5000 people and I have the only taxi company so I'm pretty much free to do whatever I want in regards to vehicle choice, colors, etc. Everyone seems to love the Vibes. They're very roomy and the seniors find the seats just the right height for getting in and out. The doors are easy to open/close because they are so light. Even little kids dont have a problem getting in themselves. Only the occasional 300lb 6'8" monster of a human being has trouble getting in.This 03 Vibe was the first one sold at the dealership here in town. Now there's Vibes everywhere. Many customers would ask how I liked them and I always gave them top marks so they went out and bought one. Even 2 of my drivers now own Vibes...lol!. All the locals are used to them by now but I still get coments from people visiting our town on my unusual choice of vehicle. They're definitely not the usual boring Impala, Caprice, Crown Vic, etc. When I'm in another town, the stares I get from other taxi drivers is priceless!

I'm a "6'8" 300lb monster" that has no trouble whatsoever getting in and out of my new Vibe! I love the head room and the driving position. Although I could use a little bit more leg room, it sure is a lot better than most other cars I've been in.

I think we had been golfing at Last Oak ... if we were camping at Crooked, we would have brought the Vibe.I bought the first Vibe off the lot from Carlyle (I was living in the area at the time), so I totally hear you on the dealership being slightly clueless about the Vibe. We're in Wolseley now, so I totally know where Melville is!!See you around!

man that's pretty ineresting... the first genviber to hit the limit lol. i live in cali, and i'm wondering if that "problem" would have to be fixed before the car can be sold. it's really good to know that these cars can go that far without any serious mechanical problems after seeint that picture, now i want my speedo to read 190. maybe sometime down the road i'll swap it for one like yours and have it adjusted. sounds good to me, i think i'll do that

You're limited to 299,999 units used to measure a distance, whatever units your cluster is programmed to display. 299,999 miles for US spec clusters, 299,999 km for Canadian clusters. As far as the '06 question above, probably the same limitation applies, I don't see them changing this...

yeah, i know that. but if reading in kilometers, then he only reads up to 185k miles (299,999 kilometers). if he switched to miles, then he has up to 300k (299,999 miles) miles of reading.

I'm really glad to hear that Vibes can rack up the miles. I'm getting ready to get either a Vibe or a Matrix to replace my 2001 VW Golf TDI that currently has over 317,000 miles (not km) on it. They have all been troublefree, but since I use my car to make my living, I'm getting nervous with all the miles. Nothing can last forever! Jeff in Texas Future Vibe/Matrix owner. hey welcome to the family jeff. yeah if you take care of your vibe, it will take care of you. unless you have a GT/XRS, then the clutch will most likely be the rebellious part, and give you the finger approximately 3 centimeters away from your nose.

Thanks for the welcome. My Golf is still on it's original clutch (and virtually everything else), but I'm going with an automatic for the Vibe/Matrix. I'm getting tired of shifting for myself. I will be keeping it mostly stock, and driving it about 350 miles per day doing route work. Any mods I would make would be for safety/comfort/mpg/longevity purposes, not power or looks. Oil and transmission coolers do more for me than dubs and chips. It's hell getting old...LOL!! I sure wish Toyota would put a small turbodiesel in the Vibe/Matrix. The torque in my Golf (for the engine size) is unbelievable. Either 155 ft/lb or 173 ft/lb depending on the version of the 1.9L engine. Also that torque peaks at only 1900 rpm, so there's no need for "high revin"...lol! (According to Wikipedia, the 2ZZ-GE engine used in the Matrix XRS has 130 ft/lbs. of torque.) Top that off with a true, honest everyday 50mpg and I guess it makes getting old fun. Jeff in Texas Future Vibe/Matrix owner. My current car: http://s151.photobucket.com/al...iles/

I used to own a Peugeot 205 Turbodiesel when I lived in Europe. It would be nice to have a bigger selection of TD cars over here. Also I'm not sure how costly the repairs are for work on the diesel injection system. I have done some repair work on my old car on the injection system like replacing injectors but for some other things you have to take it in to an injection specialist. The max rpm on diesels is much lower than gas engines but they are very fuel efficient and the engines last a long time. Also since there are no spark plugs there is no ignition system to worry about. My old 205 also used to get around 50mpg (UK mpg which translates to about 57mpg US).

I was just looking at this post from a year ago, interested in finding out, does anyone know if GM made a fix for this on our models, or has anyone else had this problem and gone to GM? Did they get any resolution?
