Seems like the parents were being 'friends' rather than parents, and now someone is dead. Sad fail.

Update - two years later ...http://www.timesunion.com/loca...0.phpQuote »Woman to get $1M in DWI crash that killed husbandUpdated 08:54 p.m., Wednesday, December 21, 2011ALBANY — A Columbia County woman who lost her husband of more than 50 years to a teen drunken driver will receive $1 million in a settlement with the motorist's mother, who had supplied alcohol to her son and his friends, the widow's lawyer said.Marie Meehan, of New Lebanon, sued Susan Haas after the crash that took the life of Robert Meehan, 72, on Sept. 25, 2009. Meehan was returning home from visiting his mother in Massachusetts when his pick-up was hit by Lars Haas, then 17, of New Lebanon. Haas, driving his mother's 2008 Pontiac Vibe, blew past a red light at Routes 22 and 295 in Canaan and struck Meehan's GMC, causing the man to be ejected from the truck. He died about six weeks later.Haas later pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide, assault and driving while intoxicated. His mother was sued under New York's general obligations law, which holds individuals who provide alcohol to minors civilly responsible for their actions. Two insurance companies for Susan Haas agreed in the last several days to pay the $1 million settlement to Meehan, who was the administrator of her husband's estate, said Jason Shaw, a lawyer with the firm of Whiteman, Osterman & Hanna who represented the widow. In a statement from his firm, Shaw said an investigation revealed Susan Haas had allowed her son and other teens to drink "significant amounts of beer and other alcohol at her house on the day of the collision and on prior occasions."The statement noted one witness, a convenience store owner, said under oath that just prior to the crash, the mother bought "several cases of beer," although Susan Haas had testified that she "never drank beer."Shaw noted Lars Haas admitted in his guilty plea that he had been drinking Budweiser — the same brand of beer his mother had purchased — on the night of the crash.Shaw also noted another lawsuit, brought by one of Lars Haas' passengers, remains pending. An attorney for Susan Haas could not be immediately reached.Shaw told the Times Union, "This case shows the incredible jeopardy that can be caused for a parent if they provide alcohol to minors — and they have to be very careful. I think some (people) are very cavalier about this. It can lead to a tragedy and then the adult is going to be held responsible."

Some of these cases drag on sooooo long that the recipient ends up dying before any settlement is made. As far as the irresponsible mom, she should be locked up as well for some time. Then there is the "stupidity" factor of which will NEVER be held accountable in our society. Truly sad

The insurance didn't cover the criminal things that she did, it covered the civil liabilities that she created. Just like you have liability insurance on your car; if you run a stop light and hurt somebody, then your insurance covers it. Such a sad story though; one can only hope that others learned from their bad example.
