Despite the fact that there is a button labelled "AUX" on the factory radios, there never was a 1st Gen Vibe with a factory Aux connection.

Aux refers to factory CD changer connection. Some aftermarket products can also connect to this.

I'll rephrase what I said. There was never a 1st Gen Vibes that had a factory auxiliary 3.5mm connection for an ipod or phone.
I guess on the very few radios that had them, the aux button would be for the external CD changer. However, I think every factory radio had the AUX label, even if it didn't have the changer (or even the connection on the back for the changer).
