Kinda interested in scoping out the place one day. If anyone is interested in meeting up there and doing some exploring of the abandoned town with the underground mine fires let me know. It's about a 4 hour ride for me.
Yea, I've always wanted to discover that ghost town also!I was thinking of taking my dual-sport motorcycle so I can get around those barriers they have on the roads. It's only about a 2-1/2 hour trip for me.http://www.offroaders.com/albu...a.htm

I'd be taking the walking path through some of it. I just wanna head there with my camera and snap away.If I can't get there before snow starts falling I would probably wait till Spring. Although I do have AWD, and it would be cool to see snow falling all around with liek 4-6" then you get to the town and it is bone dry.I wonder how it affects the overall air temp in that little area.
Sweet that's two. Of course I get to make the long haul but 4.5 hours isn't bad. Took me that long to get to Fairfax, VA from here to see my fiance at school.
If you guys go....you may want to consider the famous Dutch Kitchen Diner in Frackville for a meal....its not far from Centralia and has good food and more atmosphere than the chains.....I'd also consider stopping by Pottsville for some Yeungling.....http://www.dutchkitchen.com
IF it were to happen next summer and if i'm still living in PA or somewhere close i'd go but other than those circumstances i dont think i'll be able to. too busy with senior yr classes and senior project

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C...vania Coal mine from the 50's-60's that a fire started in due to burning garbage. It has been mostly abandoned and only about 9 people still live in the town. Kinda like an urban exploration trip.

Man, that would be a lot of fun. I wish more "meets" were in interesting places and not just parking lots. If I lived closer (or if this turns out to be next year) I would definitely turn up. Take lots of pictures, in any case. I bet the 'ol Trix would look sweet with a toxic, smokey backdrop I read up on this while I was at work today. On Wikipedia, there's a mention about Centralia and some murders back in the 1800's related to the mines and the Molly Maguires, Pinkerton Detectives and whatnot. Real shady, turn of the century robber baron kind of stuff. That led to a whole afternoon of reading up on early PA coal mining history (I'm a huge history buff, and kind of a nerd about stuff like this). Thanks!

The last time I was there, I was escorted out of the area by the police since I was driving around on paved sink holes. I have fond memories. I toured the entire anthrasite coal region as a Geologist in college. Right now, I'm watching my driveway add up to 30 inches. Drove the '03 around to pick up some chinese for dinner (mango chicken if you must know). The car is a death trap compared to the '09. AWD serves only to power you through the snow on a straight line. My TC and SC on the '09 keeps me from skidding into the telephone poles as I "play" in the snow. My wife's AWD on the other hand will only help me plow straight ahead INTO the telephone pole!!

I already have permission from the boss to skip out on work tomorrow morning, so I am well dug in.

Wow, I never knew this place existed, as well as the interesting, yet sad, story behind it. It would be awesome to check out, and its only around 2 hrs away from me as well!Check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjtmaCI9_wM

It's interesting to read about but really you wouldn't know you'd missed it if you weren't paying attention. I've driven through there a few times en route to places in northern PA and upstate NY.

50 years; really? I did not know that I was born the night before the fire started. Coincidence? I think not
I went on a Glassboro State geology field trip to Centralia back in 1984. We got run out of town by the cops after venturing too far down into some fire caves. I got to speak with several locals who remained (at the time) and who kept the local diner open. It is an amazing story.
