Solomons is burning

Post by joatmon »

Probably only affects me and vibeman614 here, but there's a huge fire going on in Solomons Island (southern calvert county MD for those that are thinking south pacific)Rumors passed back to the office today are that a natural gas explosion at the Lighthouse restaruant took out the block, and the strong winds are pushing the fire, boats on fire, bars on fire, etc Tiki bar is supposed to be toast. only news I've seen so far is http://www.nbc4.com/news/8028886/detail.html

oh no--not the Tiki Bar! Seriously, though, that doesn't sound good. I hope there are no injuries.

hey, the opening of the TIki Bar in the spring is the singularly most important cultural event in the area for the drinking crowd. Draws a huge amount of people, including a massive flotilla of drunken boaters from around the Chesapeake. Was supposed to open up in a week or two. people around here know to stay away from the island the weekend the Tiki Bar opens up, unless of course you are going there.edit, http://www.thebaynet.com says there is a fire behind the tiki bar, but doesn't say the tiki bar is lost. Here's a (ex) condo

I will take your word for it! I wasn't meaning THAT Tiki Bar...just tiki bars in general. I've never been out East and would LOVE to go out there--I think I could get in to the whole east coast lifestyle...fishing villages, islands, the Atlantic, etc. How big is this island? Will this fire essentially wipe out the whole place? I never did like fire....

Piney point is far from Solomons, there's the whole patuxent river and all of St. Mary's county between the two, so the beach house is safe (at least from this fire)I drove by the area just at sunset this evening, no more smoke Looks like the tiki bar actually survived. Some businesses and homes completely lost, but not as bad as the local rumors would have indicated earlier. http://www.thebaynet.com/ has some good pics

oh I wasnt worried about the house I know it isnt near solomons. Just not too far away. Just saying that we go to solomons all the time in the summer. I hope everything is alright. The tiki bar must survive. Sucks about peoples property though. Our house caught fire when we first moved to virginia. It is a bad way to be man.

Wow, that's too bad. I may cruise down their sometime in my boat. Right now it's in St. Michael's, but in a few weeks I'll be sailing across the bay to Edgewater, MD.
