Recall for Vibe 2009

Post by cythraul »

Hi,

I just got word thru the equivalent to Consumer Report here in Quebec that the 2009 Vibe is being recalled for a problem with the windows switch:

Sorry it's only in french:

http://www.protegez-vous.ca/automobile/ ... -2009.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Here's the Google translation (fat = grease :)

2009 Pontiac Vibe | Fire Hazard
Posted: November 7, 2012
Pontiac Vibe 2009: On certain vehicles, due to fat misapplied the main switch to control electric window on the driver side could get stuck or stop working. If we tried to lubricate the switch may overheat and melt. A switch that could melt produce smoke and cause a fire damaging property or injuring someone.
Correction: Dealers will inspect the master switch to control electric window on the driver side and apply special grease that prevents heat buildup, or replace the circuit board of the switch, if necessary.
Number of vehicles affected: 16,724.

Note the serial number of your vehicle and call the dealer.

Found this via google "vibe recall canada".

CANADA: Toyota-built Pontiac Vibe recalled for power window fix

By Graeme Roberts | 16 October 2012

The global recall of 7.4m Toyota vehicles to check the master power window switch has also
affected a Pontiac variant produced and sold in North America.

Transport Canada has announced a recall of 16,724 units of the 2009 Pontiac Vibe which was
the now defunct General Motors division's variant of the Toyota Matrix, a small MPV
derivative of the Corolla similar to the European Verso.

In the US, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has included the 2009 Vibe in
a recall of 2.5m Toyota vehicles.

As with affected Toyotas, due to improperly applied grease, the driver's side power window
master switch could stick or become inoperative. If attempts are made to lubricate the switch,
the switch assembly could overheat and melt. A melting switch may produce smoke and
potentially lead to a fire causing property damage and/or personal injury.

Dealers will inspect the driver's power window master switch and apply a specialised grease
that inhibits heat build-up, or replace the power window master switch circuit board, as
necessary.

This recall is coming for the 2009 US Vibes as well.

We talked about it in this thread.

Ah yes, I remember reading that thread and now I see where it does mention the US in the quote provided by the original poster ;).

I got my letter too ... Now I'll just wait for the second letter, then call up the Pontiac Customer Assistance number (hoping they still answer it!), and ask them how I can get this warranty repair done in Germany. Opel used to do it (and should still do any GM vehicle), but with the demise of Pontiac, who knows?

I think I got my letter like two weeks before Christmas. Still waiting on the follow up. But in the meantime I have gotten phone calls from GM for offers for other cars. Pffft. Whatever, I like my Vibe even with its stupid issues.

We got our letters in the mail yesterday saying that a fix for the master power window switch issue is now available. I guess I'll give the dealer a call one of these days to setup an appointment.

Got ours on Friday also. Hate to go through the bother of getting it done but it is a potential safety issue. Of course I know that the dealer will insist on mutilating the gas pedal while I'm in there. I'm not convinced the pedal cut is needed.

After my pedal job the car became dangerous since the "improved" pedal was extremely sensible (hitting a bump would push my foot down hard on the gaz). After some arguing at the dealer they agreed to replace the whole thing with a new pedal insted of a hack/slash on my old pedal. The car has worked perfectly since.
The problem wasn't with the pedal being cut but had everything to do with the small metal shim they insert into the pedal wich appears to be something along of the line of "we're putting this thing in your pedal... not really sure if it will work... if not we'll take it out and try a new one"

You, the customer, should have the right to refuse any such lacerations and only have ANY recalls performed that YOU choose to have done to your vehicle. If they insist, then do what I will be doing .... someday. Simply take the door switch assembly into the dealership and say "here you go" perform the recall! No car needed, just the switch assembly!

Our Vibes have been fine since we had the whole new accelerator pedal assemblies installed. I honestly don't remember them being that bad after the pedal hack job, but they are so much less sensitive now with the entirely new assemblies. If nothing else, you could tell them that you want an entirely new assembly and not just a hack job. Unfortunately, the dealer I took ours to wouldn't install the new assemblies without first doing the hack job, so as soon as they were done with the hack job, I made appointments to have the brand new assemblies installed :P.
