Who else has received the newest recall (#10038) letter from GM?

Post by vibenvy »

My mom and I got ours in the mail today...Why is your vehicle being recalled? In your vehicle, there is the potential for an unsecured or incompatible driver's floor mat to interfere with the accelerator pedal and cause it to stick in the wide open (depressed) position. A stuck open accelerator pedal may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop the vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury, or death. Toyota has determined that this condition does not exist in vehicles in which the carpeted or original equipment driver's side floor mat is compatible with the vehicle and properly secured. What will we do?To make it less likely that an unsecured or incompatible driver's floor mat can interfere with the accelerator pedal on your vehicle, your GM dealer will modify the accelerator pedal and the floor surface in the driver's foot well.If your vehicle is equipped with a set of Pontiac Vibe All Weather Floor Mat (AWFM), the driver's side mat will be replaced. All this will be performed for you at no charge.Because of service scheduling requirements, it is likely that your dealer will need your vehicle longer than the actual inspection and service correction time of approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. If your vehicle is within the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, your dealer may provide you with shuttle service or some other form of courtesy transportation while your vehicle is at the dealership for this repair. Please refer to your Owner Manual and your dealer for details on courtesy transportation. What should you do?You should contact your GM dealer to arrange a service appointment as soon as possible.Until these important remedies are completed, we request that you take out any removable driver's floor mat, place it in the trunk, and NOT replace it with any other floor mat until the recall remedy has been performed on your vehicle. If you have a Pontiac Vibe AWFM, please inform your dealer and bring it to the dealership at the time of your service appointment. Do you have questions? If you have questions or concerns that your dealer is unable to resolve, please contact the Pontiac Customer Assistance Center at 1.800.620.7668 (TTY 1.800.833.7668). Your satisfaction is extremely important to us. In the event that you are not satisfied with the modification of your accelerator pedal after it is completed, a replacement accelerator pedal will be offered to you at no charge.I will personally be stopping by our local dealer of choice next week after work to see what they have to say. I DO NOT want them modifying the floor surface, however, I will gladly take a new pedal and driver's side all weather floor mat .So... have you received yours yet? Are you going to have it done? Opinions?

Yes I got this, I posted over in the other recall thread. Don't know what I want to do as I use non-factory floormats (highly modified to fit the space and accommodate the floor hooks of course).

I am curious to see how the "new" all weather floor mat is different from the current one, if at all.

I got a recall letter today too (10038). Not sure what I'm going to do yet. I can't imagine the pedal would actually get stuck so I'm leaning more towards not getting it done...

It has nothing to do with what kind of floor mat you have . In the letter they make it sound like the GM all weather driver's floor mat has been re-designed to reduce the risk of it getting stuck against the pedal and consequently, if you spent the ridiculous amount of money on the GM all weather floor mats, they will give you a re-designed one for free. Although, I don't see how the GM all weather mat could move even an inch since it is attached to the hooks on the floor and it takes a fair amount of movement to get off the hooks to remove it to be able to vacuum the carpet . This is why I am very curious to see if and how it has actually been re-designed. This is why I'm going to personally speak with my dealer about it next week to see what they have to say.

Got mine today. Like Jackie, I'm leaning toward not doing much if anything. AWFM? I don't have them. I've got WeatherTech DigitalFit mats (molded to the shape of the foot-well). They don't move, hooked or not. Modify the accelerator? Maybe, after talking with the service manager. Modify the foot-well? No!

So I'm I to assume this covers just the 09-10 models?

How do they "modify the floor surface in the driver's foot well".The Lexus owners site http://www.clublexus.com/forum....html has a photo that looks like they butcher it.

I had the recall done yesterday on my vibe, They took the pedal out and shaved it, and they did this to the floor....(Also included in the repair is to replace a foam block under the floor carpet with a smaller one to lower the height of the floor slightly behind the gas pedal.)

...looks like quite a few "things" being done....called our local ex-Pontiac dealership, which is now Buick & Cadillac, and they didn't know ANYTHING about this recall...yet, especially about what "parts" are being used, because nothing has been sent to them and anything "needed" will have to ordered from Toyota....talk about a "buck-passing"

jalopnik has a page where they make fun of the Toyota procedures for this recall, but they do include the service procedures in case anyone wants to see exactly what will be done in the fix http://jalopnik.com/5586073/la...-wrapthe procedure is separate images, one per page

So, my mom and I have decided not to worry about this recall. We don't want them "butchering" the floor and "shaving" the pedal. We haven't had any problems and I don't forsee us having any. I am very interested to see what, if any, differences there are between the new one and the current one. Please be sure to post pictures when you receive the new floor mat! Thanks!

Hmmm, I got the one with shim insert done, but I think I'm going to have to pass on this one myself. I've never had any problems with the original carpet floor mats interfering with the pedal. Now that I have the WeatherTech mats with the retainer hooks, I really doubt I'll ever have a problem.Besides, personally I didn't spend all the money on a brand new car to have the professional and precise repair of a hacksaw to the pedal. It is definitely a little disappointing to see this kind of fix, I really would have expected something better ...

Reading all this - I checked out my 2009 Vibe. 1. There are hooks at the rear (near the seat) that prevent the factory mat from riding up.2. There is a good 2 inches between the front edge of that mat and the accelerator. No way the accelerator could get caught under that mat.3. My heavy rubber winter mat that I lay over the regular mat is shaped and cut out so it is maybe 4-5 inches away from the accelerator at the bottom, and 2-3 inches on the side. That mat does not move.No way I am going to let them circumcize my accelerator pedal and do a breast reduction procedure on the padding beneath the carpet.

Most of you have automatic tranny's and thus there are only TWO pedals down there. My 09 Vibe GT is a manual tranny and thus THREE pedals down there. The one thing I noticed right away was how close all three pedals are to each other (good thing I have a small foot/shoe size). In my prior small car(s), Ford Escorts, which also were sticks, the pedals were well spaced apart. I need as much surface area on ALL pedals so that my foot doesn't want to slip off of it. I've gotten use to the spacing now and don't even notice the closeness being an issue antmore

The recall letter came in the mail since I've been away from home ... I'm gonna pass on this one. No way my stock mats or AWFMs could get caught under the pedal, and I don't trust my local dealer not to do a butcher job with this one.The only Vibe-related mail I hope comes while I'm away is my engine cover with a new VVT-i 16V overlay from GrafxWerks!

Yes, it is a bit of a butcher job at best. If you don't like the hacked pedal, you can request a new one that has been redesigned. That is what I am putting in my wife's car.here is an excerpt from the recall:1.Submit a claim using the table below.2.Courtesy Transportation - Submit as Net Item under the repair labor code.Labor CodeDescriptionLabor TimeNet ItemV2276Pedal Asm & Floor Modification (inc. floor mat exchange if applicable)1.5N/AV2277Floor & Tibia Pad Modification Only (inc. floor mat exchange if applicable)0.7N/AT5772*Install Second Design Pedal Asm0.2N/AV2278Cost of Saw and Sander (only 1 claim per dealership allowed)N/A***The Second Design pedal is not to be installed unless the pedal modification in this bulletin has been performed and the customer returns requesting a new pedal.**Submit the actual cost of the orbital sander and sanding disc, and reciprocating saw and blades, not to exceed $225.00 USD, $238.00 CAD.

Well apparently my dealer "did me a favor" and did the recall on my car when I took it in for them to check out the cig lighter, or so they told me on the phone when they called me to say it was ready..... grrrrr not happy. Anyway I will post some pictures of the results when I get it back home this evening.

I would honestly be p***** if they did it without asking me. You should raise a big stink about it.

About time they start working on this, Toyota has been cutting pedals since late february. When I went in for the other recall in march I asked the mechanic if they were going to start cutting pedals any time soon and he lookded at me like I was from another planet.Thinking back on it, I don't know if I will waste my time on this. The last time they took out my pedal (to insert the metal dime) the pedal got all screwed up and was actually much more dangerous than before since the pedal would accelerate on every little bump the car took. The was absolutly no resistance in it so every little bump would send my foot down on the pedal. I brought it back and told them to fix it and even though its better, it's still more sensible than it was at first and I don't like it. It took some fun out of my vibe since I have to be much more focus on the pressure I put on the pedal on bumpy roads. I don't think I want to them to play around with the pedal anymore.

Got my recall notice yesterday in the mail. Not planning on getting the recall done on my car. I think Toyota should be replacing all pedals, not just cutting them. Had it been Ford, GM or Dodge trying to get away with a hack job, people would be *****ing

After they played with it, the pedal was so loose that when I hit a bump in the road, the shock was enough to press my foot down hard on the gas pedal, thus launching the car forward. It was both scary and dangerous. It was as if there was no physical resistance left in the pedal. I went back the next week and they had absolutly no idea why it was doing that so they took the pedal off, removed the metal shim and started back with a new metal shim. The pedal reistance is back to maybe 80% of what it originaly was but it still pisses me off to know my vibe used to be better than it is now.Toyota offered to give unsatisfied owners a new gaz pedal if they didn't like the feeling of the "repaired" ones but sadly GM did not follow a similar line.

Anyway I will post some pictures of the results when I get it back home this evening. Did YOU a favor? Well I am sure they are adequately compensated for that recall/warranty work.

I have experienced the same thing when I would run over a sudden hard bump in the road. However, I must hold an extra light and steady foot on the pedal, then before the recall. On the other hand, I find that I no longer have the original "Take off, pause, and ZOOM" issue I complained about. The pedal now should have a stiffer return spring setup to counter the frictionless feel.

*UPDATE* The dealer got my Vibe done in an hour and a half today! I have in my possession the "new" driver's side GM all weather floor mat! I also have in my possession the 32 page document that the techs use to do the entire service procedure beginning to end (including part numbers and diagrams)! Unfortunately, I don't have access to a scanner at the moment, but I am going to try and get it going this weekend so I can scan the 32 page document for anyone that's interested. The service manager printed it out for me after I asked what exactly they were going to be doing. He looked it up on the computer, his eyes got huge and he said, "I'll just print it out for you because it would take me an hour to tell you everything!" For anyone that's interested, the part number for the "new" driver's side GM all weather floor mat is: #22745618. It is available on GM Parts Direct for $29.07 not including shipping. It was not available until after July 16 of this year, according to this document I have, which could be why some of your dealers were having trouble getting ahold of one. Unfortunately, they did have to turn in the old driver's side GM all weather floor mat for "liability reasons". I was bummed because I was planning on using it for something else, but oh well. Later on tonight I will post before and after pictures of the pedal and floor modifications and comparison pictures of the old and "new" driver's side GM all weather floor mats.

The old and new floor mats are exactly the same size. The only difference is the design of the upper corner that is nearest the accelerator pedal. You'll see what I mean in the pictures below:Front-side comparisonBack-side comparisonOld driver's side GM all weather floor mat - front-sideNew driver's side GM all weather floor mat - front-sideOld driver's side GM all weather floor mat - back-sideNew driver's side GM all weather floor mat - back-sideThe upper corner on the new floor mat is somewhat stiffer with the new design. I actually prefer the design of the old floor mat, but since they had to keep the old one, I'm stuck with the new one . Had I known they were going to keep the old one, I would have put the carpeted mats back in and not said anything about having the all weather floor mats. The pedal so far is feeling pretty good. You'll notice in the pictures below the modified pedal is significantly higher up off the floor than the unmodified one. Before pedal and floor modificationsAfter pedal and floor modificationsThe modified pedal feels much stiffer i.e. when I hit a bump or something my foot doesn't bounce up and down on the pedal like it used to. This is a good thing because my foot bouncing up and down on the pedal is what would cause the "harsh downshift" alot of times. I am still trying to decide if I want to bother having them install a whole new pedal assembly or not.I was going to pull the carpet back and take some pictures of the floor modifications they did, but I decided I really didn't want to mess with it . Visually I see no difference in the way the floor looks on the driver's side, so the modifications they did under the carpet must have been very minor. If anyone has any questions, let me know. I will try and get the scanner going so I can scan the 32 page service document this weekend.
