Toyota recalls 2.3 million vehicle including the 09-10 Corolla and Matrix

Post by star_deceiver »

http://www.cbc.ca/consumer/sto....html http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/201...ecallToyota is recalling 2.3 million U.S. vehicles to correct sticking accelerator pedals, the latest in a string of quality problems that have plagued the Japanese automaker. The recall includes the 2009-10 RAV4, the 2009-10 Corolla, the 2009-10 Matrix, the 2005-10 Avalon, the 2007-10 Camry, the 2010 Highlander, the 2007-10 Tundra and the 2008-10 Sequioia.Toyota Motor Corp. spokesman Brian Lyons said the recall is due to the vehicles' pedal mechanism becoming worn and, in some cases, getting stuck. The recall comes just months after Toyota issued a larger 4.2 million-vehicle recall because of pedals getting stuck due to insecure floor mats.

ColonelPanic, how sure are you about that statement. I was notified by GM about the last recall (the brake pipe freezing in temperatures below -20) and that was well after Pontiac declared bankruptcy. I am not saying you are wrong, I know GM DECLARED that recall before it went bankrupt, but if they do not have to call recalls, you would think they wouldn't have to honor the ones they already announced.

Watch GM say "oh, Pontiac's with the old, bad company so we're not responsible."Technically every GM brand and every vehicle built before June 2009 was "Old GM" The "New GM" bought all the assets and brands that were felt to be most profitable. Under federal law however, they will still need to issue a recall since most vehicle recalls are "encouraged" by the NHTSA. Furthermore, it would be in the best interest of GM, not to mention good PR, to voluntarily recall the Vibe and announce that they are going to fix a Toyota problem. I'm guessing that we Vibe owners won't hear something for 60-90 days as Toyota doesn't even have enough supply to fix their cars.

Quote, originally posted by Toyota Spokesman »Toyota spokesman John Hanson said the automaker does not yet have a solution to the latest problem but is working to develop one.The problem as I see it is the pivot points on the pedal wearand cause the pedal to jam as, when traveling through it's swept area, it twists and binds. The solution as I see it: Provide lubrication!!!!Every moving part on the car should have one, IMO. Yes, standard maintenance would take a little longer. I once owned a 1976 Datsun pickup, it had grease nipples on EVERYTHING! I havn't found one on the Vibe (yet)... But from working with greasable and sealed-for-life (non-greasable) bearings at work. I can tell you that the sealed-for-life bearings ALWAYS (always) wear out before the greasable ones!!!As you can see from the lubrication chart for my bike (link in signature) it shows what and where to grease. There are no nipples though, dissasembly is required somewhat (such is motorcycle maintenance). But it's nice to have an easy list with pics to follow.2009-10 Vibe Lubrication chart (Canadian owners manual pages 11-13, 11-18, 11-19) these things need to be done once a year!http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=40166And FYI.... If you don't know what everything in the lubrication chart is...Chassis Lubricant:Aerosol Lubricant:Not WD-40!!!!Multi-purpose Lubricant:Weatherstrip Lubricant: Works great for waterproofing your boots and leather jacket as well!

Absolutely no way is anyone going to start hacking away at my gas pedal. Until I actually experience this stuck pedal syndrome personally I'll leave well enough alone. Bad enough that I had GM do the brake line recall.

Very interesting: http://www.wave3.com/global/story.asp?s=11891912They say the supplier already has the fix in production. Sooo, how long have we known about this, Toyota? Long enough to get the supplier to redesign the parts and get them put into production.

A lot of confusion - this from MarketWatch.Toyota's recall now includes the 2008 though 2010 Highlander, along with the 2009 and 2010 model year Corolla, Venza, Matrix and Pontiac Vibe.Toyota already halted sales of the Highlander, Corolla and Matrix as part of the separate recall to fix sticking accelerator pedals, the report said.Toyota recalled 4.3 million vehicles due to the floor mat problem in October. Last week, Toyota recalled 2.3 million vehicles with possibly faulty accelerator pedals that risk sticking.Separately, Toyota's North American unit said in a statement Wednesday that it's been working closely with supplier CTS Corp. on a "revised design" that remedies problems associated with acceleratorpedals."Pedals featuring the revised design are now in full production at CTS to support Toyota's needs," the company said. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Reader Comment on that site ----Why is Toyota looking at redesigning ACCLERATOR PEDALS when it is almost 100% clear that the PROBLEM RELATES TO THEIR ELECTRONIC DRIVE BY WIRE ACCELERATOR COMPUTER SOFTWARE? Is Toyota really this clueless in solving this problem which has been known for many years and over which a number of people have already died?------------------------So is it the pedal or the SW? Are parts going to first go to get Toyota back in business or to fix previously sold units. I also read somewhere that it was associated with cold weather and freezing water. Is the claim that people have already died true? Was that one accident we saw defintely linked to this issue?

Wow its getting better. The National Auto Auction Association is now telling its members to cease selling used Toyotas at auction until a fix is available. See article:FREDERICK, Md. — The National Auto Auction Association issued a recommendation this morning that all member auctions immediately halt the sales of recalled Toyota vehicles, covering those the automaker ceased selling. The models involved include: 2009-2010 RAV4, 2009-2010 Corolla 2009-2010 Matrix, 2005-2010 Avalon, certain 2007-2010 Camry models, 2010 Highlander, 2007-2010 Tundra, and 2008-2010 Sequoia."This list may not be all inclusive, and further information will be forthcoming as NAAA receives it," officials stressed. They went on to say, "The safety of our customers and employees is our utmost priority, and in that regard the suspension should continue until the issues have been resolved. NAAA will work with and support the decision of TMS as they make every effort to address the situation. At this time, we cannot provide a time frame for such a resolution.

Note that this doesn't affect 2004 and older Vibes with mechanical throttle linkage, just 2005 and newer. But I still wonder if the primary reason for the sudden production shut down is really 'inventory control', and not safety.

Maybe the 26 left includes Vibes that the dealers took the $7,000 for and turned them into "used".In reading a lot of what is being reported I am also reassured by the fact that the problem, if it develops at all, is very probably limited to cars with over 30,000 miles (I saw 38,000 as one figure.) I may be dead of other causes (liver failure, heart attack)* before my 2009 Vibe has over 30,000 on the odometer.P.S. I was going to add "shot by jealous husband" but at my age that ain't gonna happen.

We just talked with our GM dealer and they've taken the car(were willing to tow it in!) and we have a loaner now till this gets resolved. We only have 5000 kilometers on it by the way.Just heard on the news that the Secretary of Transportation, Ray Lahood, is looking into this Toyota pedal fix but he also mentioned looking into the electronic side of the issues. This could be helpful in what we're all saying here about the drive ability issues with the Vibe

Attached is a statement put out by GM on the issue. Says that 2009-10 Vibes are involved in BOTH recalls - the floor mat issue and the accelerator issue. Myself, I don't see how my '09 GT floor mat could ever get up under the pedal, unless it came loose from the retaining hooks and I pushed it up under there. I just don't see a potential problem with correctly mounted stock '09 floor mats. (This was downloaded from the GM Owner Center page.)

I just put my twin 5 months old to bed & have not read the entire thing but I feel like I am getting the run around. My dealer says they don't know any thing yet. Which I really do understand. I dig that GM has to fix it but Toyota has a fix for it, so GM should have it right? Unless GM does not trust the fix. The dealers says I will get some thing in the mail when GM is ready. Any one else?

Toyota cannot purposely delay parts and fixes to GM vehicles since this is a Federally mandated Recall, However, I would actually prefer to have Toyota get 1 million of their "fixes" into the real world to see if actually repairs the issue. The last thing I want is to have my car taken apart and put back together multiple times as there is nothing more annoying than a car that squeaks and rattles.

The dealer called me to come in for the petal shim install.I wasn`t in any hurry to get the petal shim installed, but if they are calling me to come in I might as well get it done. There were several other vibes in for the petal fix campaign that morning. My guess is they had the parts and dealer new the letters were in the mail, so may as well start bringing them in for the shim install?

We got our Vibe done before the official notice arrived too. One reason we insisted on this was because our Vibe was plagued with the jerky acceleration syndrome that no has been able to fix.I wasn't expecting there to be any difference from the fix ..... but ..... there was!Off the line and otherwise it feels like a normal car now not that there still isn't dead spots with the auto tranny where it will lag but its much smoother now and predictable.Has anyone else had the repair done and did you notice any difference if you had these problems?

got my peddle fix, I left the dealer lot & floored it & shocked my self. My peddle is no really easy to push down to go. It used to be the peddle required a little force to push to give it gas.So I wonder if mine was gummy & this was the start of my peddle failure.

...got the GM Recall # 10018 Accel Pedal done this morning, took 2 hours (work sheet says 0.7 hr!) and I saw five other Vibes come in while I was waiting...don't know if they too were having the recall fix done or not, but it almost looked like a GENVIBE convention seeing six Vibes all parked in the "service" lane!

Pedal fix update ....Well, now that I've been driving it for awhile I certainly don't think the pedal fix changed anything fundamentally. If you drive it hard it still acts the same but the fix has made driving it a smoother affair for me. If you drive it in a conservative manner it feels more like every other car. This at least makes it easier to live with
