Few little updates from today...

Did the first oil change on Traxi (the name my dad has given 'her'). The oil life monitor was at 17% and the odometer was at 6330. This engine requires at least a synthetic blend, so seeing as my dad does quite a bit more driving than my mom and I, I decided to just go ahead and get Penzoil Platinum full synthetic (my dad and I are diehard Penzoil users). It was $24.xx for a 5 quart jug at Walmart. I checked two different places for an AC Delco oil filter and came away empty handed, so I begrudgingly went into the parts department at the local Chevy dealer knowing they'd have them in stock. I was in and out in just a few minutes and it was only $7.24! Come to find out, it's not a filter but an "insert". My dad was freaking out about this, but everything went fine, other than trying to figure out what size we needed to get the damn canister off! Although changing the oil on this engine isn't hard, it's definitely not quite as easy as our Vibes. I did the usual checking of fluids, etc, etc. Everything was fine. The cabin air filter is in the same place as Vibes, but the glovebox is a major PITA to pop out. They did wise up with the cabin air filter door though. It's hinged and doesn't come completely off which in theory seems like it would prevent broken tabs and / or losing the door. The cabin air filter was surprisingly dusty, so I'll keep an eye on it. I'm thinking it may have been more from sitting around on two different dealer lots for who knows how long. Speaking of sitting on dealer lots, when I checked the tires, which are supposed to be 35 PSI front and rear, both front tires were at 40.5! I'm thinking dealers probably over inflate them in hopes of avoiding them going flat sitting on the lot. I pulled the spare out and checked it too. It was at 45.5, so I put it up to the 60 it's supposed to be at.

After all the maintenance was done, it was time for some cleaning. I went over the dash with a duster, wiped down all the windows, pulled the floor and cargo liners and cleaned them up and vacuumed. Interior wasn't bad at all. The exterior was a different story. I washed it and than ended up going over the black trim with Mother's Back to Black Trim Restorer as it was already looking kind of crummy. This stuff works really well! It doesn't leave a greasy, oily, sticky, etc residue and it left the trim looking nice and black, not super shiny or anything. I'm curious to see how long it will last...

Last but not least, I used black PlastiDip on the front and rear bowtie badges. I am currently waiting to put a final coat of Glossifier on them and they'll be done. I am going to do a little photoshoot with Traxi tomorrow, so stay tuned for pictures. Thanks for reading :)!

Good call on running a full synthetic, that little 1.4L will chew up the dexos1 blend in short order.

Pennzoil Platinum has served me well in my 1.4L Sonic. I haven't ran any UOA's on it but it always runs smooth and quiet with that stuff and still looks mighty clean under the oil cap after 50k. Right now I am using its cheaper cousin (Quaker State Ultimate Durability) as Meijer had a better sale on it at the time. The OLM will be griping at me sometime soon to change mine. :D

I actually prefer changing oil in the Sonic over the Vibe, namely due to the cartridge filter up top. I do like the waste reduction compared to the metal cans and how I can inspect the filter closely afterward with ease. ;) It isn't really necessary but I bought a Lisle low profile socket made specifically for those filter caps which helps out a bit since there isn't much clearance between the filter housing and PCM when using a ratchet with an extension. It's a little tricky maneuvering the filter out around the charge pipe but overall isn't too bad. One of these days I should get an oil extractor so I wouldn't have to crawl underneath the darn thing.

BTW... Amazon has the ACDelco PF2257G oil filter for $6.47 shipped prime, if you have that. I order from there when I'm too lazy to leave the house. Sometimes go to the nearby Chevy dealer which them for less than $6. Amazon also has good prices on the cabin air filter as well - if the Trax takes the CF181 like the Sonic, it's $12.45. I bought the filter at the dealer once and grossly overpaid.

Anyway, I hope your dad is enjoying the Trax! We've got 5 Sonics in the family, it's a good platform!

Thanks for all the insight on this platform! My dad fell in love with it the minute he drove it :P! It's very peppy for what it is. I was laughing at the little intercooler yesterday while doing the oil change!
