I guess this knocks a Subaru Forrester off my Vibe replacement list.

my ex girlfriend had an older model forrester. it too was an oil consuming POS (at a fairly low mileage and age). it also was equipped with an engine known for chronic head gasket failures (not admitted by the maker because someone in japan would have to kill themselves) that, like this repair, required removing the engine to repair (so much for the "brilliance" of the boxer engine-it's a nightmare to service, and boy, do they need service...)

that does not even go into all the other things that broke on the car that should never break (or deteriorate, like the rusted through "stainless" exhaust. or the unfixable electrical gremlins... or the rear wiper that deteriorated and permanently damaged the rear paint.

could not ever recommend any of their cars to anyone ever.

Interesting article. The few Vibe 2.4l engines that are oil burners are probably just as bad BUT not every single one of them! Toyota claims that as long as your engine does NOT consume more than one quart of oil every 1200 miles, then a recall is not needed. Junior's 2009 Vibe GT uses about 2 quarts in 5000 miles. They claim this can be normal, so we live with it and keep an eye on the dip stick.
