Removing scratches on side mirror glass?

Post by vibenvy »

My mom's Vibe suddenly has a bunch of scratches on the glass in the driver's side mirror. Is there any way to safely remove them without further scratching the mirrored glass? I know you can use 000 steel wool on regular glass. Is it safe to use on mirrored glass as well or no?Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

How deep are the scratches? Hairline or can you pick at it with your fingernail?

Hairline I would say. They're not deep, just surface scratches.

Thanks for the links Ryan! I will try a few things and see how it goes. They're just surface scratches so hopefully I'll be able to at least make them less noticeable.

ohhh I wonder if you had a bird who was jealous of himself. Have you ever seen that? Its the funniest thing ever. The downside is the bird scratches the heck out of the sideveiw mirrors trying to attack his reflection because he thinks its another bird it its territory. This has happened over at my parants house a bunch of times. They had to fold the mirrors in or put a plastic bag around them until the bird learned there was no longer any threat. I think the mirror did not fold on one car so thats why used a bag.Yeah I remeber they had this one crazy cardinal who would land on my moms old dodge dakota sideview and really duke it out with himself...

I thought of that actually because this happened to my dad's S10 about a month or so ago. He came home from work and told my mom and I to go out and look at his mirrors. Both mirrors had blood and scratches all over them. Well, actually the scratches were just marks because they came right off when he cleaned the mirrors off with glass cleaner, but the blood made it quite disturbing .If it is a bird, it's definitely not happening at home because the Vibes are always parked in the garage when we're home. Hmmm... I don't really know what else it could be other than territorial birds though .

I tried toothpaste, metal polish and Nu Finish Scratch Doctor (it works great on scratches on the paint so I figured it was worth a try ). The scratches are still there. None of these products made even the tiniest bit of difference. Does anyone have any other ideas I can try?
