Auto polishing appliance

Post by vhoward1122 »

http://tinyurl.com/68byv2I bought a 6" orbital polisher. It came with a variety of bonnets to use for polish application, removal, and buffing. It seemed to go faster and I got a more even coat of polish than when I did it by hand. I like the results, but was wondering what everybody else thought about these machines?

I use a Meguiar's G100 Dual Action Orbital Polisher on my car. It has 6 speeds which helps immensely!Bottom line is anything orbital or electric will ensure not just a more even coating but also a better breakdown of the product to be more effective. Look into using polishes and waxes designed for orbital use over hand use. I stick with the Meguiar's Professional line (tan bottles mostly available online) such as #83 and #80. I use the higher speed of 5 for the polishing and swirl removal. Then down to a low spead 3 for the wax application since you are top coating the paint for protection at that point. Be sure to apply good pressure to when using the machine. Just letting it glide over the car does nothing. Also change up your pattern to ensure full coverage. I do my sections in a 2x2 square going up and down then switching to left and right. I repeat and then remove the product.

Does the Meguiar's G100 come with bonnets? What kind(material), do you recommend?

It came with one #8006 foam pad. It does not use Bonnets. The backing plate has velcro that the Meguiar's pads stick to. I replaced the hard backing plate with a flexible one to allow more movement in tighter areas. I use the Meguiar's 8006 pads for swirl removal and polish. Then I use the 9006 soft buff foam pads for the final wax. Every so often I have a nylon brush that I turn the machine on low speed and from the center work my way out with it on to clean off the excess on the pad that gets built up. Pads can be washed in warm water, but after a few washes the velcro stick wears off. They are cheap though so I have extras. And never NEVER use the same pad with a different product. I took a magic marker and on the back of the pad wrote the product # that goes with it, i.e. #83 or #80 or #26.

Makes sense, thanks. I need to get a new polisher. Meguiars produce good stuff.

Meguiar's has a new version out, the G150 I believe its called. The unit I have is about $150. If you don't want to order one you can go to Lowes and get a Porter Cable 7424. IT is the same exact unit but the Meg's one comes with a lifetime warranty.

Cool, Whelan. Next time I get to Lowes I'll look the Porter Cable up. Thanks!

Do yourself another favor. If you get the PC or the Meg's, Pick yourself up a Fleixble backing plate. It is 100% better. I get all my Meg's products from this place.http://www.autodetailingsolutions.com

Will do. Is the flexible backing plate in the autodetailingsolutions.com site?

the new megs is the G110. I would also suggest looking at the Porter Cable 7424 which is the same thing as the G100, and you can usually find it a little bit cheaper. both machines work wonderfully.
