Some of you may have read my last thread about the damage to my car. It's looking like we might forego repairing the damage to the cladding (which is minor but stacks up to about $2000), and just get the rest fixed. That means a new windshield, and a full or touchup respray on almost the entire car. We're thinking of maybe changing colors completely, given the opportunity. So what color, I ask?Feel free to add options, but keep in mind it would have to go well with the grey of the interior. also, the dark grey cladding will still be there. Also, it maaaaay just be an exterior respray, not sure the pricing yet. I'm not even sure if this is an option, but I'm daydreaming. Humor me. Would this just look terrible if we changed the color and left some interior spots (engine bay, under hood, door jambs, etc) silver? If so, that may be the dealbreaker, but I'm not sure which way to go yet. It's so dang tempting to try a new color.

i went with the blue..not a fan of purple..personally if i had to repaint my car it'd be a pearl white..similar to what the cadi's have..or my favorite..candy apple red like this
that looks sick...cant really see it..is it a picture? or graffiti? doesnt matter it looks awesome and definitly different..cept i wouldnt do that to a 200,000 lambo though lolQuote, originally posted by Blanco_Diablo »I say design your own + clear coat Like this...

sharpies? damn, wonder how many sharpies it took to do that, looks amazing though, still wouldnt do it to a lambo, but im sure u can wash it off one u sand the clear coat off lol
that would be a hoot to doodle all over a car like that. Kind of nerve-wracking, though. You don't see many custom painted vibes, really. There was that one on eBay, silver, red and gold that kind of looked like Ultraman. Otherwise..?So what do you guys think, generally, of the thought of an exterior respray in a different color? Would it look awful or ..?

Anyone care to try p-shopping some of these colors onto an 03? Thanks in advance..I'll be talking with the shop early this coming week, so we'll see then if this is plausible at all. Thanks for all the input & suggestions.

Thanks everyone for the input. It looks like we're going to do the "sensible" thing and keep it silver, just doing the minimal repairs (hood, windshield and roof) and dump the rest of the $$ into the loan. I can live with a few scratches I suppose, in exchange for shaving almost $3000 in debt. That purple would've been nice though.I'm wondering, when a repair shop resprays a part of the car, do they do it with GM/NUMMI spec paint and clearcoat? (i.e., will it suck?) or do you think they'd use higher quality stuff?

It will depend on the shop, whether they use DuPont, BASF, etc... and not knowing what NUMMI uses, I can't say it won't be the same. But even small body shops usually guarantee their paint work, word of mouth is big in the business...

I'm pretty sure NUMMI uses the cheap dollar store paint in the spray cans. So anything else would be an improvement. Seriously though, since I heard NUMMI uses water based paint due to environmental restrictions/whatever else, is it a good chance that the body shop would be using something different / better?

My favorite color on a car is a dark charcoal. If I had the opportunity to get rid of my cladding and repaint my car, I'd go with something like this in a heartbeat:http://i51.tinypic.com/10qb9sy.jpgI'd actually be pretty darn content with a G8 in any color but dang, the dark gray looks stunning. My current dream car is a G8 GXP in that color. Mmm.

I vote Phantom Purple which is a Mica (small metallic) color, and I am a Mazda kinda' guy. PPM was/is a rare color and one they only offered for 1-1/2 yrs. It can look quite black, or quite purple depending on ambient lighting. But I also like the metallic blue of some Vibes... as well as the Lava red.Just my .02

Interesting side note on paint pigments:http://online.wsj.com/article/....htmlh ... tagePaints that I have found interesting from auto manufacturers the last few years have been the carbon black metallic on the G6, the laser blue metallic on the Impala, the Sunset Pearlescent Orange paint on the Mitsu Eclipse, blast orange pearl paint on the Neon srt-4, sunburst orange pearlcoat on Caliber srt-4, the pearl and diamond whites on Caddys, any color on the Challenger (plum crazy, inferno red crystal pearl or B5 blue pearl would be good), and Vista Blue or "Bullitt" dark highland green on the Stang.
