Wheel Rim Cleaning Fast and Easy, but not for faint of heart

Post by Derf »

Going on a tip I, decided to tackle a problem that had been annoying me. Rust stains on my 05' painted aluminum rims. Tried the usual, soap, wheel cleaner, polishes, CLR, nothing worked. So used Oven Cleaner, yes used Easy Off Oven cleaner to remove the rust :o ,... and it worked great, even got off stubborn tar deposits. Previous owner had never cleaned the rims, and they had some blemishes, so decided to go for it. Note: It worked on the 05' painted rims without issue, I tried this on my Taurus rims (clear coated aluminum), and the oven cleaner started to remove the 20 year old paint on the plastic decorative center. Let one wheel go for 15 minutes and it started to soften the clear coat. Try a test spot before doing the whole wheel. Do not try this on new or custom wheels, just wheels that are beyond resurrection.

-Remove wheel from car
-Put on gloves and goggles, place wheel in ventilated area on cardboard to protect your floor (did mine on stone driveway)
-With wheel completely dry, spray the oven cleaner on all the rims surfaces (front and back), it will foam. Gently lay tire flat on its backside
-Let it sit for about 5 minutes
-Use a small soft nylon brush (toothbrush soft) to scrub all surfaces, won't take much pressure, just lots of motion to loosen the accumulated gunk. A hard nylon brush will scratch the paint
-Rinse complete wheel with water

A 16 oz can will do all four vibe wheels front and back with one even application. For about $3 did way better than $10 plus products that still left the rust.

Before cleaning, note the inner and back part of the rim:

After Cleaning, the deposits on the back of the rim are significantly reduced:

Now I have to take care of those rusting rotors and drums to prevent stained rims.
