FYI- OEM Wheel offsets from toyotanation/matrix

Post by vibolista »

I haven't been able to find an 'official' listing for Vibe OEM wheel offsets... but looking around a bit I found a chart for our close relative, the Matrix, on toyotanation web site. The Matrix has naked wheel wells (no cladding) so I'm not sure if they would have to use a larger offset to bring the wheel into the well a bit. We have the GM variant, so I really doubt they (GM) would go to the expense required to produce a wheel with a different offset for the Vibe. If you can see the attachment, 16 inch steelies and alloys get a 39mm offset. Then it's quite a jump to 45mm on the 17 inch option. I have yet to find something like this with official markings from the people that brought us the Vibe. If anyone else comes up with a document showing Vibe offsets, post it, please! Would help quite a lot when we are trying to determine aftermarket fitments, or at least reduce some of the guess work.

6mm is only a little less than 1/4", it = .2362. It's not as drastic as it sounds.

Usually offset has a lot more to do with clearance of brake components etc. than it does fender liners and body parts. Manufacturers allow quite a bit of clearance from body work to minimize rubbing from ice, snow or mud buildup and for suspension travel and steering.

I tried out a set of 205/55 16s on alloys that were marked 42mm offsets... and yup, they ended up about 3 to 4 mm farther into the wheel well than my OEM 205/55 16 tires on the steelies. So it looks like the steel Vibe wheels are about 38/39mm et, just like the Matrix. Something else that the wheel offset can do is line up the outside edge of the tire with the outside edge of the wheel well. As an example, if you bolt a 40mm et. 16" wheel with a 205/45 tire on my '93 Honda Civic, the tire sticks out of the wheel well by 2 or 3 mm. That can be prevented by using a 42 or 43mm et., to set the edge of the tire right along the wheel well... giving you a really nice flush look. That's what I'm trying to achieve when I get a set of 17 alloys for the Vibe. So far, TireRack and Discounttiresdirect both said that a 225/50 17 tire, ( the ones I already have) will not fit or that they cannot guarantee it to fit. They both say it's too tall. It's only a half inch taller overall than the 'recomended' 215/50 17 and the 235/45 17. It's even 2 tenths of an inch taller than the Big Boots project 275/40 17s. I looked around the wheel wells and could not find where the problem would be with that whole extra 1/2 inch of overall tire diameter. The research will continue!

They will fit noooo problem. Discount and Tirerack will not recommend any tire which is more than 3% larger. Big Boots tires just barely rubbed on bumps and corners with a 2" drop (Tein S-Tech). He now has about a 1" drop with no rubbing issues. If you have the tires try it. They're not doing you any good sitting in the garage.

So, I bought a set of 2005 16" Toyota Matrix XRS standard alloys (see above) for $200 to replace my 16" steelies this spring. The guy who sold them to me had written off his 05 Matrix but still had the alloy wheels in his basement. So now I want to replace their Toyota silver center caps with Pontiac center caps -- anyone know if the Pontiac Vibe center cap part is a direct fit for these Matrix wheel center cap holes? Anyone swapped Toyota rims onto their vibe? Did the Pontiac caps fit?

I'll post pictures of the transplant when its done. :ugeek:
