lug nuts

Post by jim94 »

I own a 2008 vibe with stock aluminum rims. I had a flat and found out that the lug wrench doesn't fit the lug nuts. W T F. Wow.had to call AAA to take my tire off to put the spare on to drive to a tire store to have them repair the tire. 4 hrs later and vacation resumes. At least my Pontiac fiero has the correct lug wrench. One learns something new every day

Are your lug nuts jacketed or solid? Most likely if the nuts are factory, they are jacketed. If you have the jacket lug nuts, the lug nut gets rust forming between the inner lug nut and the outer jacket. This swells the outer diameter of the nut so the socket does not fit the nut anymore.

A lot of vehicles use jacketed lug nuts and have this same problem over time.

You may want to find some solid lug nuts if you have the jacketed lug nuts to eliminate the problem or just replace them. After a few more years, you may find the socket that fits today does not fit the nut again.

I ripped the jackets off and keep a 20 mm wrench handy.

Wished I had seen this before yesterday. Had the same issue with a flat and the lug wrench in the wheel well not fitting the lug nuts. Walked to work and back in the rain to get a t-lug wrench only to find that two of the lugs had been stripped sometime before I got it. UGH! Had to get the Vibe towed and the stripped lugs taken off. Had them check the rest of the Vibe wheels and there were five total stripped lugs on it.

I would like to replace the jacketed lugs with solid ones. Does anyone have any recommendations as to which ones to get?
