Finishing up project "Hurricane Overdrive". Image

Mother Road, Route 66, In Oklahoma. The only remaining original section of the road, a fun bumpy dusty drive.
Rims have reflective tape added for better night time visibility at intersections, plus accent during the day.

The fill neck was nearly black when I got it, 900 miles later you can start to see bare metal in the fill neck, I am sure the oil filter is happy.

Like this car very much, only wish the arm rest on the door was higher...

Looking good! I'd be interested to see the behind-the-wheel-well mod you're talking about. There's a ton of space in there in the 2nd gen too that I've been eyeing.
Derf wrote:Like this car very much, only wish the arm rest on the door was higher...
Ugh, the 2nd gen is the same way. No matter the height of the seat it is just too low for anyone taller than like 5'6".

Had to trim the recessed plastic compartment behind the door. Every time you open the door the items would fall out, so at least now I can reach in and access all mounted items, plus added depth to available area.

Finally got some POR-15, so now just need a warm day to start filling in the stone chips on the hood.

Found bottom of rear passenger door starting to rust, along the door skin panel seam. Appears few small spots over time rusted along the seam until it become a line of rust. Found a few more spots on this door. Ground out the rust and painted with POR-15 black, also found a few small spots in the hatch area. With the tailgate open they were near the weather stripping. Caught it before it blistered the paint, so spot coated with POR-15 Appears as the road salt lingers in these hard to clean areas and is doing its damage. Pic of the door, will try to post the tailgate area rust later.

WOW! I wish we were neighbors so I could have gleaned information from you before some of the projects I did with my 2005 Moons & Tunes. Specifically, I added Monster Mat sound deadening to my doors and spare wheel compartment. Without any guide on what I was doing (and far less mech aptitude than you) I've had some problems. Like you I stuck pieces inside the doors behind the vapor barrier. But, I spend my winters in Mexico with the car parked in hot sun heat. This has caused some of those pieces to fall off an get tangled into the power window mechanism. Pain in the (removed). The sound deadening helps the audio a bunch, but road noises haven't changed much... which was my prime motivator. I will next need to do a more thorough job in the back like you have.

Also thinking of purchasing quieter tires. Have you tried this route?

Thank You, Gorgeous Blue Vibe. Let's Trade :)

The tires currently installed:
FRONT Uniroyal Long Touring.......... 205/55R16 89T rating, 1 tread layer, 1 steel + 1 Poly belt Made Oct 2009 in Indonesia,
89T rating #1279 at 118 mph 190 km/h estimate they have just over 50k miles and the tread is still about 1/2
REAR HP Touring Negotiator S-1023 205/55R16 91H rating 1 tread layer, 2 steel + 2 Poly belt Made Dec? 2011 in China
91H rating #1356 at 130 mph 210 km/h estimate they have just over 10k miles and a lot of tread left.

I just rotated the Uniroyals to the front, the road noise followed them, for 50k they still have 15-20k left, and they drive smooth, no cupping, shakes, or odd wear patterns. So will roll with them until they wear out. Been following several posts to see which tire model is quieter. Sound deadening, has been tricky to get the most bang for the buck. Audio wise, got the highs and bass good, but the mid bass diminishes quickly when going over 40 mph. Maybe next winter will remove the front carpet and dash trim to add deadening in the front floor and near the firewall.

Derf 2005 Moon and Tunes Deluxe Rust!

Post by Derf »

While cleaning this past month found surface rust in the back hatch near the weather striping. Caught in time before it blistered. At this stage, covered with POR-15 so I did not have to remove the rust prior to coating, will see how it holds. Guess the winter salt and slop accumulates causing the paint issues. Hope this is isolated to a few Vibes:

Pic of the rust untreated, most I found was right next to the weather striping, or seam in the metal:

Also put in the Moon and Tunes Cargo carpet, Fits Great! Still see it being offered new at some GM sites, but found an 06' mat on eBay for the right price. Now the trick to keep it clean.

Getting ready to do driver side door mod. Looking over posts going to go for three things in one shot
-Ground light, when door is opened
-Illuminate window and lock buttons
-Turn signal indicator in mirror.

Found these posts:
Mirror:
viewtopic.php?f=33&t=15103&p=465132&hil ... rn#p465132" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
viewtopic.php?f=33&t=33213&p=386012&hil ... rn#p386012" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Door Buttons:
viewtopic.php?f=29&t=41380&p=486023&hil ... ht#p486023" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Anyone have any tips or information before beginning to take the mirror and switch panel apart?

Well, the fall lingered on due to other projects. Finally got the winter tires installed today during oil change / tune up. Had been looking on Craigslist, E-bay, etc for set of good used snow tires. For over three months, I was unable to find anything local, bought a new set. Two weeks later a set came up for sale in the area. :roll: At least the new rims look nice, until the DOT sprinkles their magic seasoning on the road.

Purchased from Tire Rack, with UPS drop off. Wanted to use our local tire shop, but tires were going to be a special order. Used rims I found were pretty rusty, for the money, new seemed the way to go.

Went with Michelin X ICE 3 Probably a bit more aggressive then needed for our average snowfall, but lots of back roads and drifting snow. Liked how Tire Rack Packaged the tires and lug nuts. Can't wait to see how the ride/noise changes from the all seasons that were on the car.

After about a 100 miles on the new snow tires, nothing but good things to say. Got rid of the "road noise" I had with the tires that came with the car, at highway speed I can hear other parts of the car that were previously masked. They have better feel, will see what happens over the next 1000 miles.

Gave the engine a Power Foam Treatment (similar to Sea Foam)
http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/o ... e=APFSC-EA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Followed the directions on the can. Only issue, initially sprayed to quickly (needed to pulse the nozzle slower to prevent flooding the engine). Once I got the rate figured out, took about 4 minutes to empty the can. Unlike Sea Foam, I did not get a cloud of smoke, that said make sure your tailpipe is downwind, still has a strong odor. To apply the treatment I popped the (Vacuum line?) off the air intake tube just before the throttle body, then moved it so that the straw from the can was in just inside the air intake tube, them placed the line most of the way into the hole. Started the car and began the treatment. After the can ran out turned the engine off waited a few minutes then drove the car, making sure to rev it up to 4k several times to work the engine and ensure the cleaner was out of the system. I did end up with a P0420 code (Catalytic / 02 emissions issue), but I believe this to be my fault, it was cooler than the can recommended 45* instead of 70*F and I initially applied the cleaner to quickly. After a few trips reset the code with my UltraGuage, no further issues. After running the cleaner through and putting on about 20 miles, performed regular oil change.

Also cleaned the MAF, before, note the buildup on the temp sensor:
Image

After cleaning:
Image

Hoping to boost the gas mileage, but now that we are back to winter blend and higher cold weather fuel loads, will be a while before I can tell.

Project has been in the works for a while, finally had both time and weather on my side. Upgrading the lighting package on the Vibe. Below are several links to posts showing individual items that can be tied together for one package. How many LED's can you fit into a Vibe?

So how many LED's can you fit in a Vibe? Image
Only ran into a few major issues, unexpected rust behind the mirrors and on the roof rail mount bolts. Having to drill out a screw in the mirror, again due to rust. The headliner in the car being extremely snug (this is a good thing, but makes routing wires hard)

Derf 2005 Moon and Tunes Deluxe Wheel Covers

Post by Derf »

Added these wheel covers in December, fist time it has been decent to get a pic. In person they look more dimensional, do not even notice the steel wheel. Was going to put Pontiac center caps on the covers, but like the clean silver look. Overall install was a snap, price was right $28 delivered. only thought is checking the steelies for rub marks or chips at the end of this looonngg winter season. Touch them up and be ready for next Winter!

Before I added the covers, the black rims seemed to attract attention. Here, the only locals running black rims are cars on spares or hoopdies.

Getting ready to put the summer wheels on, noticed a giant hole in the front driver side plastic inner fender well. Ordered the replacement, came smooshed in a box. Set it out and it "expanded" back to the correct dimensions.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/110977430931?ss ... 1439.l2649" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Getting ready to make the repair, will post notes and video when done.

Thinking about adding the following:
http://www.kamispeed.com/BEATRUSH-Alumi ... 516010.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
See some people have made their own, which could do, especially since this piece will cost almost $300 shipped. Looking at the underside most of the rust and dings are on the leading edge of the frame members. This shield will help cut down on the dings and prevent the dreaded "Rust" The previous owner had run over a deer, so some of the plastic trim under the car is held up by tie wraps, so replacement will eventually be needed.

Put the summer wheels on. Replaced the damaged front driver side wheel well liner.
Link to repair: viewtopic.php?f=20&t=43274" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Worked on trying to isolate a shake in the steering wheel at 65+ MPH. After making some changes and putting on the summer tires, took the car back out. Issue is not as bad, but its still present. Trying to follow steps in this thread, but at this point continues to be a mystery.
Link to steering wheel shake: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=31279" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thinking next step, go to alignment shop for assessment. Guessing at this point, one of the steering components is just on the edge of adjustment or wear, so normal techniques are not finding the issue. Talking to the original owner they ran over a deer (someone else hit it, Vibe rolled over it), were not sure if an alignment was done. At 191k miles, allignment should be done anyway.

Weather finally suitable for painting. Working on coating rust, aka the War on Salt. Although suspension parts rust, my main concern is all the supporting hardware, brackets, bolts, tabs, etc. When they start rusting they make a real mess, bolts that take forever to remove, brackets and tabs that rust through allowing the attached items to float in space. Pictures show "pocket" in front of rear tire that accumulates dirt/salt. Treated and painted the brackets supporting the brake lines (including fittings), emergency brake, wheel sensor, and body panel. The metal edge were the rocker panel is welded to the floor was starting to rust, especially near bends and spot welds. Also saw a few spots on the brake lines were stone chips were starting to rust, coated brake and fuel lines to prevent rust. Trying to prevent issues seen on older cars, especially brake line failure. Under the hood doing the same, brackets, bolts, and mounts.

Using three step POR-15 process. Metal prep solution, two coats of POR-15, top coat

Did you use Por-15, or just any old oil based black paint? If I had my way I'd use what our friends to the north use for corrosion control. Krown rustproofing which is only available in Canada. You need to do it annually but it is well worth it.

Used Por-15. Takes several steps, wash/degrease, treat with metal prep, first coat of POR-15, second coat of POR-15, then possibly a third coat of POR-15, then top it off with choice of paint/color. The two biggest concerns are surface prep and applying more than one coat of POR-15. Although the product wears like steel, any surface bubbles or gaps allow rust to work from the coverage edge. Applying more than one coat ensures 100% coverage, especially under the car where stone chips can break through. The wait time between coats is minimal, 2-6 hours the product is made to be recoated while still tacky, to ensure proper adhesion between layers.

Visiting the Krown website, like how the product works. Been using a similar product for several years, Fluid Film, to protect bare metal and stop rust
Link: http://www.fluid-film.com/applications/automotive/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Its not permanent, must apply one or more times a year. Have been using it on my Taurus, it stopped the rust creep. Treat lawnmower decks and tools at the end of use, they stay shiny until you bring them out of storage.

Wow, kind of puzzled by this one. Rust is really not that big of an issue here. This winter was kind of an aberration but road treatment is usually pretty sparing. Having grown up in New England, I'm used to the underside of my cars looking worse than mine does now after one winter.

Derf 2005 Moon and Tunes Deluxe Brakes and the War on Rust

Post by Derf »

Going over the car trying to figure out the mystery shake above 65mph. Brakes are the same as when I got the Vibe, the brake pads are like new, but started to see an odd wear pattern on the inside of the front passenger rotor. Just the excuse I was looking for to upgrade the brakes. Following Vibeny's post LINK: viewtopic.php?f=26&t=43055" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; decided to go with a Powerstop package. In the process also wanted to address RUST showing up on various parts of the front end. Key spots targeted; wheel hub shield, tranny pan, oil pan, brake lines, brake line fittings, fuel lines, frame welds, exhaust system mounts, and other bad spots. One of the worst spots was the transmission lines coming off the radiator, where they drop down from the radiator along the frame before they go into the tranny. These were really bad, looks like gunk accumulated on them holding moisture speeding the rusting process. The lines were brown with rust, not just spotted. Although the tranny pan and oil pan were fine, some vehicles (Chrysler's :roll: ) are prone to oil pan rust through, figured get it painted before any problems show up. Might seem overkill, but they call this area the rust belt for a reason. Want to see if I can get the car to last beyond 300,000 miles (after all, that is the odometer limit!)

Power Stop 2005 Vibe (non-GT) Prices 07/01/14 from Rock Auto, they had the cheapest price, even cheaper than the "one click" rotor pad package ($118)
P/N JBR931XPR and JBR931XPL Front Driver and Passenger side (directional slots) $69.58
P/N 16-923 Powerstop brake pads, front $18.88
P/N H8229 Wagner Caliper Guide Pin Boot Kit $3.19 In case tore caliper boot during re-greasing. Old boots came out, with some effort, in great shape
The Powerstop pad and hardware package 17-923 $21.79 would have been better, but everyone had it on back order, and the existing hardware I had was still in great shape

Old brakes, outside and inside:
Image
Image
Caliper pins were marginal, grease appears to be original, one on the passenger side had almost no grease (same rotor with odd wear pattern)

Weekend project time. Had a wheel that was leaking, bad rim bead. Previous owner had kept pumping with air, corrosion worsened. When I got the car, had the wheel cleaned and remounted twice. Started leaking again. Found a set of OEM rims and tires on Craigslist for $100 with usable tread. 3 of the rims are in better shape than mine. Swapped them out to finish off remaining tread. After going to winter mode, will figure out what to do about the OEM rim issue. The OEM painted alloy rims are not a bad style, but the finish is failing. After the the Erie meetup, began operation "stickerafication" to become car show compliant. :lol:

My wife's Ford Contour came with painted alloy rims. They were loosing air too. One was particularly bad. When it was time to get new tires I had the shop pull off the old ones. I took the rims home, sanded the corrosion on the beads and the valve holes and coated all sanded areas with Krylon Clear Acrylic using rattle cans.
The shop put on the used tires I bought earlier using new valve stems and filling them with nitrogen. I consider the problem solved because in almost a year I added air only once. That was last week.
The pressure was in the 25 psi ball park. Much of that loss of pressure I attribute to falling ambient temperatures.

Re: Derf 2005 Moon and Tunes Deluxe Seat Covers

Post by Derf »

Weekend project, Seat Covers. After seeing the orange Wet Okole neoprene seat covers on DeClercq's Vibe, thought about a blue set for "Bandit" After some looking, found a set of economical Cover King Spacer Mesh seat covers close to the right color. Their form fitting design was a great selling point. The front set purchased was Cover King P/N CSC2S8PN7192 (Blue inset). Shopping around Sept 2014, best price was Amazon $119 with free shipping. Ebay had similar, but the listings lacked detail. Covers fit good, the shaping is correct. They got the covers to fit the contours nicely, but would have needed inserts to grab the OEM seat cushion to get a better fit. The only odd thing were the velcro straps on the sides of the passenger seat cover. You could tell the manufacturer got to the front folding "table" seat and went uhhhh..., just add velcro and call it a day. :lol:

When I got the Vibe wanted to add covers. Use the vehicle for a variety of tasks, dirt and filth are part of the mix. Hopefully these seat covers will help keep things looking good to the 300,000 mile mark. Was close to getting the red ones for for contrast...

Certainly... the race to 300hp one sticker at a time.

After a few weeks with the seat covers, really like them. They have stayed in place, no adjustments needed. The neoprene is not slippery, but I notice reduced friction getting in and out of the seat. On a warm day the seat felt cooler, not sure if it was the blue inset vs heat absorbing OEM dark gray or if the seat cover material breathed better.

Don't want to ruin everyone's day with the four letter "S" word,.. snow, but yesterday was the first for the season. Time to start the winter project wish list.
-Stainless brake hoses to replace the OEM ones with 200k, safety item
-New head unit, the aftermarket one I put in is starting to develop issues.
-Maybe some interior work, arm rest modification, adjust a few trim panels, add sound deadening to the front

Switched back to Winter mode. Forecast for this area is filling up with snow. Last year only put about 1300 winter miles on the Vibe, snowmagedon put the stop to a lot of trips. Will see what this year brings. Sitting at 196,285 miles, will list the mileage going back to summer mode. So much for Fall, all 10 days of it....

If Winter gets to bad, may have some time to work on upgrades to the Vibe.

Gearing up for project "Huricane Overdrive" 2nd phase in sound system upgrade. Finally got some funding together and black Friday specials sealed the deal. The Kenwood deck I installed is starting to develop some software/hardware issues, replacing it seemed to be the only option. Going to finish adding sound dampening to the front of the car.

Just throwing this out there, not sure if the wheel well sub woofer that came with my 2009 VIBE GT would fit your car (factory speaker wire harness may not be present in your Vibe) but it is a stealth system and does offer some complimentary bass, you can have it for free if you are around the Akron Ohio area, it is fully functional and still has the connector on it...You could also just splice the wire to hook it up.. and its free if you pick it up it is sitting in the basement collecting dust and would rather give it away before it is forgotten.... Or I gonna sell it 5 dollars at my next yard sale, which ever comes first

With the black Friday deal for sound deadening and a winter of searching on Ebay put together an audio replacement package. Wanted to have the items installed by spring, but our below zero winter put a stop to adding sound deadening (to cold for the glue to work). And the search for an amp took longer then expected. Went with the following two items to replace the failing Kenwood head unit:

Pioneer P99RS Wanted a head unit with great sound and minimal frills. I was looking at one of the new Pioneer Carplay units, but the audio charachteristics were less than ideal. Plus did not want a head unit that would be obsolete within 2-3 years when firmware or software upgrades created issues. Found used for $650
http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/ ... /DEX-P99RS

Pioneer PRS A900 amp The new head unit is all receiver, no amplification. This amp was Pioneers way to complete the package. will install under the passenger seat, but may need to make a few modifications. Dealer demo unit, almost new for under $300
http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/ ... 4/PRS-A900

This was a bit more that I was looking to spend. Plan to drive the car until the wheels fall off an extra investment in the radio should go a long way. Will post updates once I get started.

Derf 2005 Moon and Tunes Deluxe New Tires

Post by Derf »

Finally got tires mounted and put the Vibe back in Summer Mode @ 198,266. Busy Spring! Did some audio comparison during the process. Granted this comparison was not not done with lab quality gear, but helps illustrate what I heard. Used an iPad, off the internal mic, same position in the cab for all tests, used the same stretch of road, at the same speed.

Idle Vibe:
Image

Michelin X ICE 3:
Image

Continental ProContact TX:
Image

These were observed to be quieter than the Uniroyal Long Touring and HP Touring Negotiator S-1023 tires that were previously mounted, but they were dismounted before I was able to get a comparison audio sample. The takeaway, the Continental's are equal to or slightly quieter than the Michelin snow tires

Will post a review of the Continental's once I roll a few more miles. Initial impression, handling is good, steering wheel feedback is quick, road feel is more pronounced but still mild. My Ultraguage noted an uptick in fuel efficiency, will see how the next tank or two works out.

Put about 800 miles on the Continental ProContact TX tires. Cabin noise is definitely reduced from the previous Uniroyals across all pavement types. three fill ups confirm summer mileage is slightly better than last year. Could be a combination of tires, driving habits, and ever changing fuel blends. Between the cabin noise reduction and perceived uptick in fuel economy the upgrade was worthwhile.

Busy summer have not even had time to wax the Vibe. Hope to get the planned audio upgrade completed yet this month. Saw the post on removing the back bumper, started to see rust on the box beam under the bumper. Want to get the cover off and see what I can do to reseal the metal.

Re: Derf 2005 Moon and Tunes Deluxe more RUST!

Post by Derf »

Started what was supposed to be a summer project, final bits and pieces of the sound system. Guess I did technically start it on the last day of summer. Upon removing the interior found the horror of rusted metal :evil: Appears caught it before rotting all the way through. Now one project has become two. Repair the floor then proceed with sound system upgrade. Into parts of the car that usually only a body shop sees, not liking what I see, but fixable. Posting details on separate floor board thread: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=44718 and separate Frame Rail rust thread: viewtopic.php?f=20&t=44782

Re: Derf 2005 Moon and Tunes Deluxe dead sound

Post by Derf »

While the interior is out, added 2nd phase of sound deadening. Can't wait to get it back on the road and see how much this improves the interior audio quality. Placed a layer of Constraint Layer Vibration Damper - CLD, then coated the hard to get areas with acoustical undercoating, plus touched up under the car where I worked on the floorboard. Will cut new encapsulated sound dampening padding to fit the interior, replacing the OEM fiber "sponge" originally used. Hope this will help protect the floorboard and prevent moisture accumulation under the carpeting.

Derf 2005 Moon and Tunes Deluxe starter fail

Post by Derf »

After getting the floor board repaired, went to run a few errands to enjoy the many added enhancements. After the fourth stop.... the car stopped. Turned key, starter spun for fraction of a second, then no go. :o Have lights in the dash, all electronics seem to function OK, but starter will not go. After about a half hour checking fuses and tapping on the starter, made the call for help from a few of my friends. After getting the car home, removed the starter and saw the following, can you identify the fail? I think this is what causes many of the starter sudden deaths mentioned on this site.
vibe_starter_fail.jpg
vibe_starter_fail.jpg (33.89 KiB) Viewed 18133 times
The wire off the solenoid to the starter is bare copper! I am surprised it lasted this long 10 years 200k miles. With all the salt and proximity to aluminum car parts the wire turned into a fusible link, once enough strands rot away the remaining ones take the load until "poof" no more connection. What was an otherwise great running starter was stopped by its Achilles heel, exposed wiring. Got a refurbished starter, saw the same exposed copper, treated it with anti-seize to prevent corrosion, also put a little on the surface mating to the engine to make future replacement easier.
vibe_starter_new.jpg
vibe_starter_new.jpg (33.77 KiB) Viewed 18133 times
Thanks again to the many posts on this site, made replacing the starter a breeze. Would have replaced the starter in the parking lot, auto parts store was at the opposite end,.... but it was closed. Overall the starter is not that hard to replace, just need the right length extension to reach the starter bolt coming from the transmission housing.

Hmmmm ... Interesting yet "poor" design of a starter. I would thing a solid copper bar connection would have been better? Maybe there is some "flexing" that takes place with every start to where they needed stranded copper? Maybe it makes for an easier assembly of the part? In any case it was an easy fix for you and glad you back up & running :D

While fixing the floorboard, had the urge to add more LED's to the Vibe.

Since I had the interior out, running the wires was easy. I used the previously installed interior floor light switch on the console and added the wiring for the ground effects. Ran the power wires from the console area through one of the driver side body pan drain plugs. Then attached the wiring to the brackets holding the fuel/brake lines. Attached the LED's to the same brackets, with cable ties. Results were good, no hanging wires and no drill holes into the Vibe. Puts off a nice glow when walking around the car. From a distance, it makes the rear of the car more visible. In total dankness the ground effects add dimension to the vehicle. Only thing I might change, move the rear LED segment back further.

Re: Derf 2005 Moon and Tunes Deluxe Fog Lights

Post by Derf »

Finally had a chance to finish converting lights over to LED. Installed multi function fog lights. Flipping the fog light on and off within a few seconds alternates modes. Left bulb is halogen, right is LED stepping through modes. (Put boxes over headlights for better fog light comparison)

Overall the LED 9006 assemblies I purchased are not as bright as the halogen equivalent. I seldom use the fog lights, was instead looking for purer light without blinding oncoming traffic. Several reviews indicated amber light helps enhance contrast in the fog. Will have to try it out. Part used for the conversion

Back to winter mode at 201968 miles. December was a pleasant change from last years polar vortex, snow is on the horizon. Changed the engine oil 3700 miles 90.2 hours, PCV valve, intake gasket, inspected brakes, hoses and the rest. Appears might have the start of an oil leak near the valve cover or could be the tensioner. In either case, next project is to change both and clean under the Valve cover. Shopping around appears Amazon has the best prices and two items I am unable to get locally. Looking at the following:
-Valve cover gasket Fel Pro VS50542R
-Chain tensioner O-Ring W0133-1896941-OES same as 9030122013
-PCV hose, old one is ok, but starting to get loose at the ends W0133-1746428-OES
-Spark Plugs, current ones have 30k+ miles, should be good. For the price, while taking off the valve cover, easy upgrade to NGK 4996 IFR5T11

Big day, completed valve lifter tolerance check, replaced leaking chain tensioner o-ring, compression test, and installed new sparkplugs. Converted car to Winter mode 202k miles. Hard to pass up 51*F shop day in Jan

The old plugs (top) were a Bosch platinum number, odd tip design the ceramic goes all they way to the tip, unless most of the electrode has arched away. Installed NGK 4996 IFR5T11 iridium plugs (bottom). I wonder if the previous mechanic realized their was an OEM label on the valve cover recommending iridium plugs
