Garage grease pit

Post by Vulcan05 »

I am lucky enough to have a grease pit in my garage, constructed by the previous owner. Beats jack stands and a creeper. I tossed in a couple of underside pics of my 2010 2.4. Click on the following link or Copy/Paste it.http://picasaweb.google.com/nh...bulgE

If the car is over the pit, how do you get into the pit?If you are in the pit, how do you get the car over the pit?In the South, I've seen farmers just insert a couple of boards into the side of a slope and kinda boom-out.

He dug two long metal ramps into a gradual slop and just drives out onto it. Gives him about 2 feet to shimmy around underneath. Kind of scary

The original owner of the house built the pit when he built the garage, so it has always been there. My insurance agent never said anything about the pit.

You then go down the stairs and lift them (they are 4x12) and slide them to one side. By the way, we have always felt thst we have the BEST tornado shelter in town. Have told all our friends and relatives that if we get hit, look for us in the pit, under the car.

That is a great design... Note to self, never pull into garage after having a few alcohol based drinks.

I would rather have root canal surgery without Novacaine. But I have done it in the past. Last summer, I took the old muffler off my 92 Mazda pickup and replaced it with a Cherry Bomb. Makes me smile every time I think about how easy it was.

Thats friggen awsome, but I'd be way too afraid to pull in and find out i'm not perfectly centered over it and end up driving one wheel into the pit...

The more refined pits have a steel wheel curb on the inside edge, flare in at the entry side and then run along the edge of the hole. Going slow it directs the wheel away from the pit.My brother has one, rarely uses it but it is handy when he does. It's cheap, old, proven technology that virtually anyone can install in their garage with no ceiling clearance issues from a lift. Zero repair and service costs as well, non electric, Hmmmm it's a GREEN auto repair technique!Old things become new.Dave

My fear too. That's why I never drive in with the pit uncovered. The previous owner also put a black line on the wall, perfectly centered with the pit. I drive over the pit, make sure no tires are on the cover planks, and then remove the first plank, go down the stairs, and remove the others by just lifting and sliding them aside. When I'm done, I replace all planks before moving the car. I've seen those videos on TV where someone drives their car into a pit. Not gonna be me!!!!!!!!!!!!!
