DID IT - sound dampening

Post by Water boy »

Should have done this long ago. There appears to be no sound coming from the rear of the car.2008Lot of pics to follow.Roxul Safe n SoundRandom thoughts...............Didn't have to take out back seat. Just unbolt the front lower 4 bolts and the seat pivots up. Take note that when the seat back is folded down the seat moves forward and downward, thus you can't just fill it full as when the seat back is up.I used Great Stuff in the box channel between the shock mounts. Also above the gas filler mount and in the rear door pillar near the seatbelt winder. The winder is in a protected box so the Stuff doesn't interfere.Part of the area under the seat has factory applied stuff which I didn't overlap. Also, I popped off the 4 push fasteners, that hold the edge of the carpet, to get more coverage.Use a long serrated bread knife to cut the Roxul. Anything else just tears it. Used about 1/2 bundle of the stuff. As I was stuffing the Roxul into the hollow area in the upper rear corners I found some of the factory mat material already there. Not much but it did say that the engineers figured it needed something.I did not fully cover the exhaust ports in the lower corners.I did stick the stuff as far as I could reach into every cavity and hollow spot.No pics....Stuffed Roxul into the rear hatch. Also into the box channel at the hatch latch.I also pulled the 4 door panels and applied a long strip between the crash bars as well adding a chunk of Roxul at the bottom of the cavity.

More random thoughts..................This is the wife's car. She didn't see what I did, just told here I put in some sound stuff. The first time she drove it she was totally amazed at how quiet it was. She usually has no clue what improvements I make so I was amazed she noticed. And that means it worked. Made an 800 mile weekend trip on the interstate. Just WOW. So quiet. The roofing stuff I got at Home Depot about $17 a roll. Used 2-3/4 rolls. Lowes has a similar product. Used scissors to cut the stuff. Had to use cleaner very often because of the tarry stuff. Don't plan on giving the scissors back to the wife.I got the Roxul at Home Depot. It is not commonly stocked in the South. It is a special order item at Home Depot and Lowes and at various pro building suppliers.I wrapped the jack and related tools in non-slip shelf liner (no rattling) and put it in the long storage tray. And there was room left over. This car has the 7 speaker Monsoon sound system, thus the huge woofer in the right rear panel.Didn't even try to put stuff under the dash area. Too tired. The worst part of it all was I had to be prepared to go to work during the project so not one drop of beer was consumed. Could have done this in half the time with a case of iced beer stationed nearby ... being consumed.

Nice work Mike. You gotta love the things we can pull off without our wives knowing about them. I'm always coming up with "off the wall" things and until someone else tells her about it, she has no idea her HUSBAND did the work Quote »] Could have done this in half the time with a case of iced beer stationed nearby ... being consumed. Amen to that statement Just a few to take off the edge and MAN can we be productive

Since "noise" is a major complaint on small economy cars, one would think that a factory install of such sound deadening materials would be worth the effort - and justify a few hundred bucks added to the price. It probably would not be as quiet as my older brother's Lexus 460, but I'd certainly appreciate the effort.

Come to think of it - this would be a great after market service or dealer add on. No more expense than unnecessary rust proofing or paint sealant.

Looks great man! I wish I knew of that product at 17$ a roll!!!! wow thats awesome.. is the adhesive tar based tho? is there any noticeable smell to it?I did a similar thing on my car couple weeks ago. I bought CDL tiles from http://sounddeadnershowdown.com i dont know if thats the right web .. but it was kinda expensive.. they claims you only need to apply 25% any sheet metal to get the same effectiveness.. So I went by that saving some added lbs to my car. Definitely the car is quieter, but I have only done 5 doors, and not the trunk/floor like you did. I will do that next Did you read about Mass loaded vinyl? I just bought a roll and will be sealing all my 5 doors with it when it arrives... It was 90$ from ebay... but shipping a 68lbs roll was what made it expensive.. I think Ill just use 30 sq ft to finish the vibe but I can do another car with the left over

I'm afraid to take off the side panels or doors of the car since last time I tried doing something like this I couldn't get the door cover back on right...BUT I did go to home depot today and got a 46 x 60 floor mat that has a grippy texture on the bottom and is black very short carpet on top and I plan cutting it out tomorrow when I get the time, shall be the first project on my car yay!I did also buy some insalation (sorry for spelling errors) its the stuff thats supposed to go around your water heater I plan on taking off the bottom of the cargo cover and putting it all in there to at least help a little in road noise I can't afford to go all out right now but it was cheep and it should help I would think all said and done I spent only $44.78 not bad...what do you guys think any tips?

Is there any smell at all?.. I guess its not that hot yet in GA to see, but we also have very HOT sticky summers. This seems like a good idea.. but I don't want it smelling up the car..

I've done my roof and cargo area 2 years ago with the same stuff, different brand though... no smell at all or maybe it lasted a day or 2. Must kick myself to finish project this year

What a great idea using that stuff. Heading to Lowe's tomorrow to pick up the materials you listed there. Can't wait to see what a difference it makes. I have some dynamat in the doors from when I had my old stereo and sub installed years ago at a car audio shop and definitely noticed when I shut the door and driving on the highway.

I did this over the weekend. The quick roof stuff isn't cheap. I used 2 rolls. I did find the sound proofing material on sale at Menards. It is some dense material made from recycled denim. I really don't notice that much of a difference to be honest. I still get the nasty thud when I hit medium sized bumps. I hate the ride in this car so much that I have decided to try and sell it or trade it in for a car with a decent ride.

I also did some sound dampening. I used Frost King duct insulation, I didn't want to chance smell. Its $20.00 a roll and has no smell out of the package.

Thanks for the pics, I have been wanting to do something like this for a while.

As far as under the dash..... Spouse owns an auto glass shop and when we but in a new windshield, I stuffed the empty cavity in front of the dash (accessible only when the windshield is out) full of foam (upholstery type). Made a huge difference.

Did you take the dash off for this?
By chance, did you take any pictures?
