I always forget to ask when I'm at the Toyota dealer. I use a short punch and hammer. Still meaning to buy the proper adaptor....

After the local auto parts store, Harbor Freight, and Summit Racing, I finally got the correct socket at Walmart for a few bucks. It is a black plastic oil filter socket that handles two different sizes. I have used it several times without problem.

I don't remember the size but if you do a search on here it has been discussed many times.

I just bought another strap wrench...

FYI, Toyota sells the part, on special order, for over $100!!! :shock:
Snap-On also sells one, but check around.

I am the man to ask since I have wasted so much money on store brand oil filter wrenches. The answer is 64mm. Here is a link to ebay those who sell the right one.

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid= ... &_from=R40" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This is not sold in any store that I can find. I could not even get Toyota to sell me one. It fits like a glove and is dead on perfect. While you can get a 63mm or 65mm in the store, you can angle it to get the housing to turn for a little while. But in time, it will start spinning on you and drive you nuts.

Why all the difficulty with removing oil filters? They don't need to be torqued down very far in the first place.

Screw them on until the gasket is up against the engine, then another 1/4 turn, no more is necessary. I've never had a leaky filter or difficulty removing one using this method.

it isn't a filter, it is an outer canister. There is no way you could remove it by hand once the rubber seal makes contact with the metal. It forms a very grippy seal, and takes a tool to properly turn the canister for the final turn; otherwise the oil will seep through.

Surprised no one has mentioned the Assenmacher service tool. It is sold by Amazon for $16.45 and ships for free if your order is more than $25.00. For us Canadians it's an additional $9.98 shipping for a total of $26.43, still a pretty fair price.

This.

I've never had to use a tool or wrench to get my filter off, cause I don't use one to put it on maybe. Never had a leak either.

Turn it on by hand, turn it off by hand. That works on the Vibe and on the Dodge 6.7 CTD both.

@Mark, SideShowAlan

This is the 09-10 1.8L housing. Not a standard filter. Once the o-ring makes contact, it takes about another two full turns to get it seated.

Well, okey dokey then.

Sorry, I had no idea.

Wonder what they thought was wrong with the good ol' one-piece spin-on oil filter?

The 1.8 is extremely sensitive to low oil conditions. Should someone tighten the oil filter improperly there would be leakage. Other than that...no clue. I only go as tight as my hands allow.

Even though I have a filter wrench that works, it has slipped on occasion. Eventually the filter cover will wear and the wrench will slip more.

I did some research and discovered the size should be 64.5mm with 14 flutes. I ordered one and have a picture below. Notice the slots which fit over the fins on the filter cover. It is a Laser Tools 5160 oil filter wrench. Here is the manufacturer;

after getting 33 mpgs around town, I'm glad I have the corolla engine. Even though you are right tpollauf; I know why they went to the environmentally kinder paper filter to eliminate more plastic/metal in the landfills, but I'd rather have a screw on filter as well. Nonetheless, it isn't necessary to buy anything fancy. The link I gave to e-bay will get you tons of options for a 64mm 14 fluted housing wrench cup. It doesn't slip. How do I know this? Because I have bought every other damn filter cup under the sun to include ones that kinda fit but started to slip after a while. Don't waste your money on high tech gadgets; just get the 64mm cup.
