How To: Disable the Seatbelt Beep - '05 - '08 only!

Post by BlueCrush »

THIS IS FOR '05-'08 VIBES ONLY. SORRY '03-'04 & '09+ I found this on MatrixOwners.com (originally from Toyota Nation and the Prius). It's very simple and it works. This will turn off the 1 minute beep if the car is running and either the passenger or the driver takes off their seat belt.Get in the car and turn the key to on (don't start the car,) then change the odometer to display "odo" and not trip A or B.Turn the key off.Turn the key back to on. Within six seconds of doing this, press and hold the odometer button. Do so for 10 seconds. Then, while still holding the button, buckle up, edit: then unbuckle. The "odo" display should then change to say "b-on." let go of the odo button to get it to read "b-off." Then wait for the display to change back to the odometer. That's it, you're done. The car will still beep right when you turn it on for 3 seconds if you don't have a seatbelt, but the dash light will continue flashing till buckled up. It won't beep if you or your passenger unbuckles for a moment. Salvation!

Wow this is sweet. I was expecting to have to go cut some wires or something... Even I can do this one !Not really a big issue for me cause we always wear our seatbelts but I think I'll do it anyway. Thanks for the informative post.

That annoying beep keeps my wife from getting those stupid seat belt tickets. It has probably saved us $300 by now.

You're Welcome! FYI: I have found that if you disconnect the battery you will have to disable the seatbelt beep again after reconnecting the battery.

Can't wait to try this after work -- I have to take mine off to lean over and get the mail out of the box. It always seems stupid to have to put it back on to go down the (very long) driveway to the garage. THANKS!!

I asked the guy at the dealership YESTERDAY to make the beeping stop! He said I had to live with it. I wear my seatbelts but my dog likes to ride in the front seat, then in the back seat, and then in the front seat. All that jumping around...all that beeping....uuuggghhhh. My long ride from NC to MS was very annoying. Of course, it never occurred to me to buckle the seatbelt. Thank you for this info. I am printing it off and taking it by the dealership today.

Hehehe - I had the same problem with my dogs. The really good thing is the passenger seat doesn't beep at all any more, not even for 5 seconds like the driver's seat...

WOW!!! Thanks for the great advice. I have to take my seatbelt off to get to the super low ATM machine and that "passenger ejection: thing might come in handy as well. Keep up the good work everyone. By the way, does anyone know how to make the cigarette lighter / data port continue to charge while the ignition is off?

Wow thanks! My dogs always ride in back but the groceries and the laundry sometimes ride in the passenger seat, and they always forget to fasten the belt. I'll try it next time I get groceries.Donna

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for posting this!I tried it just for kicks this afternoon; then by coincidence I went to Home Depot and purchased 20 2x4s, for which I had to fold the passenger seat forward. Never had this happen before, but I kept noticing the seatbelt light above the radio was flashing. You guess it...the sensors must have "read" the lumber as a passenger. This tip kept me from having to listen to that constant "BEEP, BEEP, BEEP" on my drive home!

Are you strapping up the drivers side? It has to be the drivers side not the passenger side. Try it out.

Yes, I always wear my seatbelt. Could it be that the lumber placed weight on the seat tracks?

Good info. Wish it would completely disable it. Don't need an anoying beep to tell me to do something I do religously anyway. But it is a good start.

Very good info, I now wish I had a 05 just so I could play along. But the bigger question is: BC how did you figure this out? and why would one look to the odometer button to solve a seat belt issue?

shouldnt their just be a lil clip that u can undo under the seats? i know with most cars..well with my sunfire..it was just 2 wires being held on by a plastic clip which ran to the seat belt...not sure if it's the same for the vibes

I'm sure that is possible, there has to be wires somewhere that come from the buckle switch... But IMHO, that's a bad thing to do. The buckle switch is used for more than just turning on the buzzer to annoy people... The air bag controller also uses the input from the seat buckle to help it determine how the air bags should deploy - whether they go off with the first stage, second stage, or not at all... By disconnecting the seat belt buckle wiring, you're basically making the car think that the passenger is wearing ther seat belt at any time, whether they are or not, and that will affect air bag deployment. And can end up causing injury.

OP - (removed) YOU ARE A SAINT!! A few months ago, I picked up a bookcase and put it inside with the front seat down and that damned beep drove me BATTY!! I honestly think that's the only time I've gassed up while running so I wouldn't have to listen to that beep anymore on that ride.Folks I got this mod on the first try out in the parking lot after work, I was so excited to get this done. It's a no brainer!Question though, do you repeat this process to turn it back on? In case I ever want to sell the car, I'd like to put it back the (annoying) way it came so the next owner can join Genvibe for the solution

Yes, repeating the process will allow you to select b-on or b-off. For those of us who do work on our cars, anytime I disconnect the battery for whatever reason I have gotten this so embedded it's like second nature to clear up.

Post by murphsouth »

Awesome!I love my Vibe but hated being told what to do by a machine. I buckle up when I get going and if I don't feel like it, locally, then I don't do that. This is a great solution to the most obnoxious chime and it's fairly easy to do (took 2 tries though???). I think you have to turn it to the RUN not the ACC position (both illuminate the LCD odometer display).
