Hello all.
A while back we moved to zeroforum's software to phpBB. For the most part it's been a welcome change. However, since moving to phpBB we've seen the crap it pulls on our posts. The GenVibe forum is comprised, mostly, of adults. Who are we protecting or helping when the word C_R_A_P is changed to (removed)? I personally assume the worst when (removed) is displayed, and when I see it, I stop and try to figure out what was actually said. If I was reading this post I would assume the first (removed) was "Bullshit", but as of right now that's a "legal" word.

I understand that people who run forums sometimes sensor things: hate speech, porn, graphic descriptions, or the other swill that can be found in other areas of the internet. Here on GenVibe this censorship just isn't necessary. We are adults talking about cars, mostly one car. And if I bash my knuckles on the goddamned radiator trying to remove the battery, I'd rather not add an unnecessary "ed" to the adjective just to get the point across.

Wow! How did THAT one get by the software programming? I agree with you totally. It's only because of all the A S S H O L E S who ruined it for us responsible adults! We have ways around this S H I T and by expressing our thoughts in T H I S manner, it actually gives the word a bit more meaning. I'd say more myself but will leave it up to when/where the appropriate post calls for such verbage to be used!

Actually, the change in forum software only affected how the banned word list was rendered. In zeroforum, banned words were replaced with asterisks, phpBB replaces them with (removed). The only effective difference between the two was that when zeroforum replaced a banned word with asterisks, it did it on a letter by letter basis, so if you posted a four letter word, it would show up as four asterisks, a seven letter banned word would be seven asterisks. Got so I would just post asterisks instead of known bad words.

As for creative spelling to avoid the banned word list, well, the official policy is stated in the Use of Profantity Notice (note that it is pre-phpBB, hence the reference to *'s) Don't know how strictly the mods might enforce that , guess it depends on how often it happens. The moderators here are gentle and understanding, but don't be mistaken, I know from personal experience, pick a fight with one and you will lose.

Things like that, the official site policy statements, used to be stickies, but they got unstuck in the phpBB transition, now you might have to either search or rely on an old (removed) like me to somehow remember that they once existed.

Honestly I do not see the profanity filter being removed anytime soon. The forum guidelines were established back during the initial creation of GVC and its use has not caused problems up until this point and will still be enforced.

While we may not be 'super strict' on some of the rules, they are indeed enforceable if the need arises. Back during the busy days when the Vibe was still being produced and new members were joining at a much higher-rate, we had our share of unruly members and had to act on these rules.

Please *try* to avoid working-around the filters. GVC, lately, has been fairly tame in moderation terms and it would be nice not to stir up the pot for us moderators.

I understand why it was implemented. The title of this thread was formulated to gain attention. I forgot about the *'s we had before, just remembered this policy was implemented after I joined the forum.

I also belong to the NT (motorcycle) forum. Those guys are STRICT. If you fart while typing a post, you will get a NOTIFICATION.

I find it really interesting that the forum retains the original text, and it displays the word "crap" in my post as I spelled it.
So when we make a post the original is saved to the database, then when that post is opened the banned words are replaced on the fly with (removed). I wonder if the server takes a performance hit to do that conversion.
