Spike in spammer registrations

Post by 808 Vibes »

In the few minutes I've been on, I've observed two "new user registrations"...both spammers. They're popping up faster than I can send an alert. Don't click on any of their links! Do you think it has anything to do with that other issue?

This has been going on for more than a few months now and no one has noticed as the accounts have been deleted. The issue is being worked on...

No. It's just that the web is getting to be a very dangerous place and as with most things in life, we have to be extremely careful and/or take our chances... the honest people, I mean.Over @ Mazdaforum, we've been regularly hit by hackers pretending to be site IT support, Moderators and/or ADMINS. They register, but do not complete the registration so they can PM but not post... and no profile page to worry about either.I have been able to discover this by getting into the Mod Control Panel and doing a search by name and IP address... then the incomplete profile shows up and I can beat the **** ( They are telling our users that they have a virus and their account will be deleted (banned) if they don't take steps to eliminate the thread to the site. Of course there is a link they can click on to "check for viruses." R~I~G~H~T~!~!~!~! Everybody that believes that, raise your had and even I'll steal ya' blind.

just wanted to say thanks to whatever genvibe power that is deleting these accounts. Sometimes I'll look in the Active user's list, see a new user registration, load teir profile, and see some off the wall location and a home page link to some obvious spam product or service. Yet I don't see posts from these people. So you mods and admins are doing a a great job keeping the (asterisks)away

I think those are either SPAMBOTS or HUMAN-BOTS, paid by how many sites they sign up to rather than how many SPAM BOMBs they drop. Though just a theory, I have noticed many from Eastern countries, specifically Russia and the Ukraine. I have been "killing" a lot of them before they've had a chance to come back and actually post. And the posts that have gotten through are usually porn or of the "How to Marry a Russian Woman" type.

Was it from someone claiming to be Ms. Rosalia J.Ramos?I got a weird spam from "her" in one of my boxes this morning beginning with,"Hello,I write to confess what you are presently going through with my Boss. I was a member of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Local and Foreign Debt attached to the World Bank office in Washington, DC, USA. I resigned my official duty when I discovered the activities of my colleagues during a private investigation I carried out. I suspected some kind of foul play in their act which they would never inform me because they know I would never be a party to such as a Christian." And so on....

You opened it? If I don't know the sender, and the subject line says something very vague (like "Hi") I send it to the "mark as phishing scam"land without opening.

Open it? No, not really. It went straight to my SPAM box which opens text only, and I don't click on any links from there.I was stupid and naive about that once before and paid the price... dearly, and on a machine that I struggled to build myself too. I was not happy and have learned my lesson.
