Strut Boot Orientation + Knocking

Post by edennis »

Hello,
I just replaced my front struts (just the struts and boots, not a whole kit) on my 04' base vibe.

These are the struts: https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/mon ... 11499891-P
These are the boots: https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/dri ... 11050000-P

My problem is that post installation I have a knocking when I go over bumps on both sides equally. I'm pretty sure I installed the boots and bump stops incorrectly, but cannot find any direction on the correct way to install them. Currently I have them oriented with the wider side of the bump stop pointed down against the large side of the boot. Should the bump stop be inside the boot somewhat? Currently it is not.

Another option is the top center nut of the strut is not tight enough. There was no way for me to hand torque that nut by hand without the strut simply spinning (nothing to grab on to and prevent this and far as I can tell), and I was afraid to over tighten with an impact driver.

Any suggestions on correct boot/bump-stop installation? And also if I can tighten that nut down safely with an impact driver?

Thanks SO much,

Eric

I have no idea, but here are two PDFs from the 03 Matrix repair manual that may (or may not) help

Hmmm... doesn't quite answer my question, however I did learn some new information about the orientation of the offset mounts. Thanks!
