Shocks Struts Springs lower ride bigger wheels and tires.

I have a brother in law mechanic who does and is bad teacher. Are a shock and a strut the same? Can shocks struts and springs that lower the ride be bought as a single install unit. I really am quite smart just on a bit car learning curve. Best vendor choice for a combo of value and performance? Any help or pointing in helpful directions appreciated. Mark
