U.S. Ethanol Subsidy; Import Tariff - both nded 12-31-11

Post by jake75 »

The U.S. Govt. subsidy of 45 cents/gal of ethanol made from corn etc. ended on 12-31-11. However the mandate to use a certain amount of ethanol in motor fuels lives on. Therefore a 90/10 gasoline/ethanol blend can be expected to rise in price by 4.5 cents a gallon. However, that may be largely offset by lower cost ethanol from South America. Furthermore foods made from corn (including corn fed beef) might get a little cheaper. And of course the federal fuel efficiently numbers are based on 100% gasoline. Go figure. The bottom line is that the govt. is still force feeding us ethanol to fuel our cars. Some people like their milk to be from cows not supplemented with rBST. I'd like the choice of fueling my cars with gasoline not contaminated with ethanol. Unfortunately we really don't get that choice.

I'm against government subsidy of any prodduct. If a product, or industry, cannot support itself on its own, then obviousy the consumer does not want or need it.Also against ethanol. I agree with Jake. I should be able to chose the fuel that I want for my vehicle.

Lowe's had 8 packs of them for about $2. But I can no longer buy the 150 wt floods, or their 120 wt replacement of a few years ago, that are necessary for several of the recessed ceiling lights in my 1958 home. If I were starting from scratch I could have 2 or 3 65 wt recessed lights and that would make the government happy I guess. For many years our Ohio Public Utility Commission has mandated a lower rate for households that never use more than 800 kw of electricity a month. I asked them why they think a 1 person household using 750 kw of electricity is more eco friendly than a two person household using 1,000 kw of electricity.

News is saying the reason is - get this - due to the ethanol subsidy going bye-bye. My math skills aren't that great but that seems more than 4.5 cents.

My math skills aren't that great but that seems more than 4.5 cents. Oil has been on a tear upward because of Iran's threats to close the strait of Hormez. It was 3.389 last night here. Also, at least around here, what sometimes happens is that competitive pressures cause an abnormally low gas price. Then that breaks and gas jumps a lot. Instead of people being grateful for the cheap gas they got for a week or so, they complain that it went up 30 cents overnight. I got a fill up at 2.969 on 12-20-11; a day or so later it was up over 30 cents. On a brighter note, my cost for natural gas to heat my home, dry my clothes and heat my water was a total of $660 in 2011. That is half what it was a few years ago, and 2012 is projected to be even less. Over 40 years ago my father-in-law convinced me that a gas clothes dryer was the smart choice - I have saved a bundle over the years following that advice.
