Computer Geeks HELP!

Post by 09vGT »

I bought a Dell XPS 13 laptop last January. Well, I figured I would need Microsoft Office 2007 for school, so, I payed the extra for it. WELL, my school does not want you to you 2007, they want you to use Microsoft Office 2010. I HAVE to use 2010. I have installed now Microsoft Office 2007 home and student, and the school gives free copies of Office 2010 Professional; which I can only use for a limited time. So, instead of upgrading 2007 to 2010, is it possible to install Micro Office 2010 along side of my 2007?

http://www.mydigitallife.info/...ether/I also saw a note elsewhere that if you have the 07 32-bit version, make sure your 10 version is the same.

I'm no expert BUT my Son Corey is. Here's what he suggests you do:Yes, it is possible to have multiple versions of Office coexist on the same system, so long that you do not use Outlook for an email program. (only 1 copy of outlook can be installed, else conflict will arise) When you install 2010, you will be prompted to either UPGRADE or Customize the installation. Choose customize, and from here you will be prompted to either keep or remove the existing version. Choose KEEP. This way your paid-for copy of Office 2007 will still retain licensed status. Keep in mind for the time being that you use 2010, all 2007 defaults will automatically revert to 2010 until you remove it. (file types). For example, .doc word files will no longer open in 07, they will be pointed to the 2010 version of Word, etc. You will basically use 2010 over the old version until it expires or however the school plans to license you. If/when it expires, you simply go into Programs and Features in the Windows control panel and uninstall it. This will automatically “restore” the old version to normal functionality. This whole time 2007 is never uninstalled---you can always open it in the start menu, it just sits idle, which works perfectly for your situation. On a side note, 2007 and 2010 use the same proprietary file formats---so why they force you to use 2010 over 2007 doesn’t make much sense, but it’s not like you have a choice. There is very little changed between these versions, most notably the office button is replaced with the file menu. Hope this helps. It looks like these images didn't load properly. They were screen shots of what to do as if you're actually looking at your computer. E-mail me direct if you think you'll need them. Good luck ............ Tim

Or I believe you could set up a virtual machine on your computer, which basically acts as an independent system, you could install 2010 on that without affecting what's on your "normal" system.I am running Vista right now (yeah yeah I need to upgrade) but I have an XP virtual machine with IE6/IE7 for website testing purposes, and also to run Microsoft 2003 for some clients who refuse to upgrade, haha.

Okay thanks! I'll give it a try later. Microsoft Office 2007 Student doesn't include outlook, so I won't have to worry about that. And on a side note, my computer is a 64 bit system.

And on a side note, my computer is a 64 bit system. That's not the problem--it's the version of Office I guess they have different 32 and 64 bit versions. Just make sure the 2nd one is the same (so only the 32-bit could run on a 32-bit OS but you could run either version on a 64-bit OS).

Its on now. When I installed there was the option to "Upgrade" or "customize". I clicked customize; I didn't get to choose where to save, just if I would like to overwrite, or add it separately. So, I did that latter. All is good!
