LCD TV - No sound on some channels

Post by jake75 »

Strange development - 4 of the channels available on my basic cable have picture but no sound. The other set hooked up to cable service is o.k. Set is nearly 5 years old - but I have a week and 2 days left on the 5 year warranty.I thought there might be an expert here that could suggest what the problem could be.

The little guys in the TV who make the sound took Christmas off?The parts were exquisitely manufactured for a 5 year warranty?Cable company having issues? But you said the other set is okay? Are they hooked up the same way (just cable line into TV, box, etc)? Could try rescanning channels, maybe they fiddled with things on their end...but the other TV most likely would be experiencing problems I would think.Give it a day (well, until Monday) and then check out the warranty service!

Just cable into the tv. We do not have to use a "box" for basic cable - about 80 channels. I did redo the "setup" scan - didn't help. I need to get ahold of American Express about that warranty extension - may not be available as their website talks about a 1 year extension of manufacturer's warranty up to 5 years. The manufacturer's warranty was one year and at the time of purchase I bought the Best Buy 4 year warranty which essentially extended the warrant by 3 years to 4 but my memory is that the AmExp coverage would add on to any extended warranty up to 5 years. Not a major issue - I can live without those channels, and a new 46" can be bought for about $1,000 - I paid $3,000 for that 40" Sony in Jan. 2006. At the time 40" was the largest LCD available. In 2006 my 11 year old CRT 25" TV had the same issue - no sound on some channels. I was ready to dump it anyway.

I called the authorized SONY repair folks. Before spending $90 for a service call they suggested I contact my cable provider, WOW. I called WOW and they suggested that I make sure that the "AUTO SAP " was not on. [That setting provides an alternate language - generally Spanish). I had noticed that all of the channels that had no sound said "AUTO SAP", though others with that designation did have sound. I turned off the Auto SAP and now have sound on all channels again. Why that would make a difference I don't know but it did.
