Looking to get a dash cam for my car, what do you think of this one?

Post by ImN3XU5 »

Hey all, I've been thinking about getting a dash cam for a couple months since I sold my 2004 AWD and got the 2010 GT. I'm not a huge fan of cameras that attach to the windshield and I want something discreet. So I've been looking mainly at cameras that are built into what is basically a slip-on rear view mirror. Here is the list I've been looking at and what I think of them as well. I would love your suggestions as well so let me know if you have any of those.

First one I found was the Papago GS268 (https://goo.gl/syv6qe). I like this one due to the smaller screen that's out of the way and the Sony sensor. The problem I've read about is that the GM Onstar mirrors are too thick and this camera won't attach to it. This is probably my favorite option despite it likely not attachable to my car.

The last 2 I found are the DOD RX400W (https://goo.gl/MP4o6d) and RX8W (https://goo.gl/lfuuzS). The only difference I see between these 2 is that the RX8W GPS is 5Hz refresh whereas the RX400W is 10Hz, which is a negligible difference. I like these because of the way they mount, using velcro straps to wrap around the existing mirror so the size of the Onstar mirror is basically a non-issue at that point. What I don't like is the camera sensor not being the Sony sensor on most other cameras I've seen, but judging from videos online taken from these 2 cameras they still perform very well, as well as not having a parking mode, which isn't a huge deal but still a nice feature to have with a camera.

Let me know what you think of these and if you have other suggestions. I don't plan to hardwire a 12V connection to one, just using a USB cable to the cigarette light port (but hardwire may be an option in the future if I decide its worth it). Thanks!

I have an A118C in my 09 Vibe and my wife's 2012 Odyssey. You can see pics of it installed here: viewtopic.php?f=30&t=45247#p513077 It's really difficult to spot from the exterior of the vehicle if you hide it behind the window fritting around the mirror, and could pass for OEM equipment. The newer replacement is the A119S, which is even slimmer.

You can conceal the power cable from the dash up the A-pillar, just pop off the A-pillar cover with your hands and pass the cable behind the side curtain airbag so the airbag can deploy properly. Then tuck the wire across the top of the windshield in the headliner.
