04 Speedometer not quite right

Post by bigdoug »

I have been checking the speedometer lately to make sure it's calibrated properly. I use Torque Pro and a obd2 bluetooth reader, as well as a GPS speedometer as well.

For some odd reason, the needle seems to be almost right on the dot when it comes to around 40-50mph. Around 30, and the speed will be 31 or so when the needle is at 30. At 60, the needle will be at 61-62 when my speed (according to Torque) is 60. The speedometer has to be 72 in order for my speed to be 70 according to Torque. And around 82-83 by the needle when Torque says I'm going 80. Torque and the GPS speed seem to match so I think those are the right speeds. If that's the case, it must be the speedometer. Is my speedometer broken? I'd hate to have to go through the trouble of moving my odometer chip to a new instrument cluster.

Speedometers are always a little off from real speed. Wheel size, PSI, tread depth, etc. all slightly affect it as well. I'd say you're fine.

2nd gen Vibes are similar to what you're experiencing except that it is purely linear from 0- top end. When driving an honest 60 the dash speedo shows 62. This is with the stock RSA tires on my 2009 Vibe Gt.

This sounds about what I observed (2005 Base) so I would consider it normal.
