AWD operation?

Post by WMBigs »

Hi all, New here with new to us 2010 Vibe all wheel drive. Can anyone explain how the AWD system works? Does it always send power to the rear end? Or does the rear end only get power when the front tires start to spin?
Thanks, MikeB

Welcome to genvibe!

It is an on demand, full time system. There are speed sensors on all four wheel hubs that are used by the ABS, the Traction Control, and the AWD systems. When the front wheels spin faster than the rears, the AWD engages the rear wheels.

Thank you, What is the mechanical connection to make it all happen when needed? Any links to a technical explanation of how this all works? My truck has the old lever on the floor.

http://www.majormedia2.com/4WDSimplifiedv5/4WD.html

Select "Reference Mode", then, under the "4WD Basics" tab, select "Full-time 4WD".

Next, select ">How does a Full-time 4WD system work?"

Click on the 4th group with the Matrix in it.

Click on the link for "Electro-magnetic Coupler (RAV4/Matrix)"

Thanks ehoff121, that cleared it up. Also answers the question, why are the front tires worn more than the rear. Gotta rotate me some tires!!
Thanks again, MikeB

Check the tread depth before you do; if there's a big difference, it can damage the rear differential.

It's one of the drawbacks of AWD- your tires all need the same diameter.
