GL4 vs GL5 and 2nd gen vibe

Post by Olds88 »

I know this has been discussed a bit here and other places. My owners manual for 2009 1.8 5sp vibe calls for GL5. I have been thinking about using redline 58304 75w90 NS gear oil
Anybody got concerns or input on this? I know gl5 can cause problems but it seems to be specd for the 09

This is a common misconception when it comes to manual transmissions but let me make this very clear. You CAN NOT use GEAR OIL in manual transmissions. You have to use MANUAL TRANSMISSION FLUID. You can use Redline MT-90 75w90 Manual Transmission Fluid or factory fluid but DO NOT use 75w90 gear oil.

I may have made a mistake-redline may not classify this as "gear oil" the label says its gl5 rated for manual transmissions. But I haven't heard of many using this fluid. Is there a risk in putting the gl4 MT fluid in a vibe 5spd specd for Gl5

I Noticed when I search the applications in Redline's website that 2009 Matrix with C59 5sp calls for MTL 75W80 GL4, however 2009 Vibe with C59 or E351 (for 2.4) calls for the 75W90NS GL5. It seems that something ain't right here? I am thinking I will go with the Matrix spec. unless anyone cares to say otherwise?

Do not use GL5, you will grind every shift.

The redline products MTL and MT-90 will work very well for you.

You can use the GL-4. It's probably a safer bet too.

I personally have used the Redline MT90 and had issues when the weather was cool shifting.

I jumped to the Amsoil GL-4 and now I'm here.
