Timing chain and vvt i problem

Post by Dave316 »

Hi all,
I have an 06 fwd with the 1.8 liter engine.
The timing chain broke and I have replaced the chain and gears including the vvt i gear.
Problem is after the install it still just wings over like there is no compression.
I have removed the cover again and all the timing marks are lined up correctly.
Anyone know what gives.
I was under the impression these were not a zero tolerance engine which is why I made the attempt in the first place.

I did not unlock the vvt i. This might be in error but the thing should still run right.

Thanks in advance.

The valves do hit the pistons if they are open when the piston hits TDC

Thank you for confirming. Sounds like new engine time.

Uh, update: I thought the 1ZZ was interference because I had Crower cams. The 1ZZ is not interference unless you have aggressive cams. The 2ZZ is interference, though, in stock form.
