Heard a noise when I put my car in gear a few times today...sounds like it's coming from the alternator at low rpm (idle) and only during cold start-up...seems to go away after car warms us, but idle at temp is a bit higher.
Get a mechanic's stethoscope or a long screwdriver and verify it is the alternator. Place the metal tip of the screwdriver on the non-moving part of the alternator while the engine is running and the handle against your ear. Repeat this process for the tensioner and the A/C compressor. The rattle is probably a worn bearing, but you don't want to replace one that's still good.
Alternatively, you can pull off the belt and turn the pulleys by hand. If one is rough or not totally silent, it's worn.
