Different years AWD transmission in my 2004?

Post by Daddio »

I have to replace the AWD transmission in my 2004 Vibe. No reverse, no low gears, only goes forward in what seems to be high gear. Fluid is brown and smells burned. Ouch!
Ebay has several suppliers that offer warranties, but I'd like to expand my search. I'm coming up empty on my specific transmission.

My car has AWD, and based on searches in this forum, there seems to be a range of years that may use the same tranny, but I can't find a list or cross-reference table. What other cars have a compatible transmission? Where can I look?

VIN:
Digits 4 & 5 are "SM" = AWD trans
Digit 8 is 8 = 1ZZ engine
Digit 10 is 4 = 2004 year

Need any more info to figure this out?
Thanks!

Hello hello! The Vibe AWD was produced from 2003-2006, and any year in there should work for you. While the base models had some changes in 2005 the GT and AWD remained as they were for their entire first-gen run. Thus, an 03-06 AWD (make sure it's the AWD one) transmission should work for you. Another good source of parts is car-part.com. That site will find you junkyard used parts and can be sorted by price or distance.

The strange thing is that it seems ALL my ebay searching results in only FWD transmissions. I have a message in to one of the sellers to verify. Doesn't seem feasible nobody driving an AWD doesn't get in wrecks.
Are there any other Toyotas that use this tranny?
Thanks!

Not sure. All I know is that it's call an MU5, while the FWD is MU4. Try looking for Matrix AWD. Because other than that, I really don't know what else uses that transmission. Try car-part.com like I recommended and you may get more results.

The AWD transmissions are harder to find because Toyota and GM sold so few AWD Matrix/Vibes. I think the mix was less than 10%.

As kitt said there are a bunch available on car-part.com

Turo'ing 15' BMW 328i Sport - Jet Black - Auto

That's what I have in my '05 AWD.

Be sure to use Toyota T-IV fluid in the replacement.
