2004 vibe P0741

Post by Ellington »

So I received my vibe from a family member after the engine seized with 215k miles on it. I bought an engine and transmission. Engine has 73k on it trans has 112k on it. After getting it all changed there is a p0741 code. At 65mph it is running 2800 rpms roughly. What rpm should it be running at this speed. What route should I go to get it fixed. Does changing a solenoid fix it usually? I have a 6 month parts only warranty on the trans. Any help would be great.

This code can be caused by low fluid level. See this:

http://engine-codes.com/p0741_toyota.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

2800 rpm @ 65 mph sounds about right. The torque converter will lock at around 40-45 mph with light throttle and should be pretty apparent.

Fluid is good. That's the first thing I checked. I don't know if this makes a difference but the trans came out of a matrix.

2850rpm is what mine turns at 70MPH so that doesn't sound bad. How about the CV joints? That made a huge difference on mine. In regards to that code check the wiring to the transmission. What year engine and transmission was the donor car? Pulling it from a Trix or Rolla should make a difference.

Ok took the car to aamco. They said my torque converter was bad. So the took it out and opened up the transmission and said it was toast. So 2500 later and a fresh rebuild I got the car back and the code popped again. Took it in and they can't seem to figure it out. The trans came out of a 04 matrix. The engine out of a 03 vibe. The car is a 04. Any help would be great.

AAMCO was a big mistake. They're a total ripoff! It's under their warranty, make them fix it.

I hope they rebuilt the whole tranny for that price.

AAMCO = All Automatic transmissions Must Come Out. I'd file a complaint and tell them you want your money back or fix the problem at no charge. You were taken.

Ok another update and question. Took it to the Toyota dealer. They say the computer isn't talking to the trans. Is the wiring different in a matrix than what the vibe is? It all fits the same. They say it can take up to 5 hours to find out if the wiring is different. May if I put a computer from a matrix in it will read right.

Vibe = Matrix. The Engines, ECU/PCM, transmissions, trans controls and those wiring harnesses is all the same. The HVAC components and the Audio systems are different

As stated go back to AAMCO and tell them to fix the problem at no cost. If you paid with a CC contact them ASAP to dispute the charges.

Here's a true story. Some 25 years ago my then wife took our 10 y/o RWD Cutlass, with 100K miles, to the AAMCO for fluid change and filter replacement for $19.99. They proceeded to harass me at work saying the transmission was going to fail at anytime and it needed to be rebuilt for $700. Finally I told them put the new filter and change the fluid and don't call me again. I talked to my then wife and told her these guys are scamming us and don't let them call me again. We put another 150K miles on it and never touched the Transmission.

NEVER LET AAMCO TOUCH YOUR CAR! The majority of them will RIP YOU OFF! There have been countless News stories where people have set them up for what should be a simple fix $50 and they charge $1000s to rebuild the Transmission

Here's more interesting reading on the P0741 in the 03-04 Corollas made at the Nummi plant.

Lesson learned on aamco. I might try a speed sensor. The one that is being used is the one out of the vibe trans. Maybe the teeth are wrong for the matrix trans.

So salsa guy. What does the cv joints have to do with it? Been at aamco for a week now and all they have figured out is they are compatible.

Also one other question. Would a abs speed sensor be a possible issue?

Also read that the engine coolant temperature sensor could cause it.

So we finally figured out my problem with my car. Turns out my computer was bad. May have fried when the engine seized. I think I still need to take it back because it doesn't want to downshift right all the time. We will see what they say about that.

It seems that you are on the verge of selling it?

Wow what an adventure. Car is finally fixed. Computer was bad then they put a third set of solenoids in. This time went to gm to get them. Glad that it's over. It's been over two months chasing this around.
