Vehicle speed sensor

Post by sking23 »

I have an 03 Vibe 1.8L front wheel drive automatic 4 speed. I have recently had my engine replaced. The check engine light is on and I had it scanned at auto zone. The code indicated that my Vehicle speed sensor was bad/defective. As a result my speedometer and odometer are not working. I ordered and replaced the VSS and it did not fix my problem. When my engine blew up last year the speedometer and odometer were working proprerly. Could someone help me please?

Have you checked all fuses and connections with a multimeter?

Yeah, it sounds like something is disconnected. Have a look around the transmission for disconnected or broken wires.

I have not looked at it but I will take it back to the mechanic and have him take a look. Also will the BAD make my transmission shift funny? It has no takeoff power and won't shift into passing gear. I can put my gas peddle to the floor and the car won't take off like it used to.

Starting to sound more like a problem i had. Im not sure about the 03 vibes but my 06 had to have PCM replaced under recall from the dealership. A normal mechanic may not know about certain recalls that specific vehicles have. Check your cars history and find out whether it has had it replaced

How do I check the vehicle history? When I bought the car it didn't come with so much as an owner's manual. But I did get my problem fixed. I had a broken wire that lead to the vehicle speed sensor harness. But because of my problem with my speedometer and odometer I now have a problem with my transmission shifting. And there is a whining/ whooping when I go into reverse.

Well there may be a Carfax or something you could check with the VIN of your car. glad to hear one of your problems has been fixed at least. I can not offer any advice on the automatic transmission as mine is a manual, if possible I would suggest going to a Toyota dealer, they seem to be they way to go for a lot of problems.

You know I tried to go to Toyota with a problem and they would not help me. They sent me to my local GM dealer, I was a little thrown by that. But yea my problem s are fixed and I am happy about that.

I had a broken wire on the plug for the VSS. Probably happened when they were changing out my motor. That's when the problem started.
