hey not bad! i def hit that 168 lb-ft torque in the 2.4 a lot. Going all the way to 6000 rpm to achieve 158 hp is much less often.

Fastest I've ever hit after removing the roadspeed limiter is 135MPH. At that point I was running out of road And this was a private stretch out in the middle of nowhere. As in not a public road.

now i will admit i speed, but the only time ive pushed my vibe to its limit was on a closed course for that specific purpose. it scared the living crap outta me when i hit the 115mph top speed limiter, bc it started poping and cracking real loud ( due to my exhaust). my friend said it shot a few flames when i hit it, which i dont believe, but who knows, the 1ZZ is a mean lil engine :)

Went to a track day a while ago and got my '04 GT up to 121mph. Albeit that was a long straight and had a slight downhill. The problem is that there is NO power in these engines between 4500 and when VVTL-i kicks in. If midrange was better, I can see the 6spd's getting maybe 130mph.

.. with a tailwind

.. downhill

I did 130 at like 7ish rpms in 5th yesteday on the turn pike , it takes quite a while to get any faster than 110 from then on it just dont pull the way 3rd gear does
( third gear makes me happy :-) )
there was a curve coming up so i gave up , but i had another 1000+rpm and 6th gear waiting :-)

at rev limit- red line in every gear top speed has nothing to do with anything outside of vvtli at least not with my trans/6200 lift point combo
i may get the hangar111 reflash to 5900 lift , just so i dont have to push it so hard to stay in vvtli
if you fall out of Lift at any kind of speed its just a dog

I have a 2007 Vibe base model which has the 1.8 L. I have never maxed it out, but I've hit 105 mph and i still felt there was more speed to gain. So for the 2.4 L in your 2009, it could reach about 120 without the manufacturer chip-out.

Had my 09 1.8l 5 speed manual doing 195kmph. It was in the rain and at that speed the windsheild wipers dont work. Definitely wouldn't do that now in the old car haha

I had to read that several times before I no longer read it as 195K mph ;) Thought you'd launched it into space

This is not about a Vibe but related, I have a home built rail buggy with a stock 1600 air cooled VW beetle engine. It has no body just a tube chassis built over a beetle floor pan plus a good windshield and roof cage. It has all of the required safety equipment to be street legal and that’s where I drive it.
When I am on the interstate I can drive at 60 mph with my foot no more than 1/3 of the way to the floor but several times I have put the pedal to the metal and held it at WOT for several miles and it seems 70 mph is all it will do ! I believe it is because of the wind resistance since there is no body and the air is blowing under the windshield and hits you in the chest and face anything above 45 mph isn’t very comfortable driving as the wind really hits you.
I read where the top speed of a late model beetle was about 78 - 80 with the same engine as I have and the Karmann Gaia with the same engine / gear ratio as the beetle would do closer to the mid 90’s due to the streamlined body profile.

I know from talking to racers that once above 100 mph air resistance really takes a toll on how much horsepower it takes to push a average car thru the air. I don’t know what the drag coefficient of a Vibe might be compared to many other types of vehicles but I would think it’s much better than a pickup truck and less than say a corvette.

I’m now well over 65 and really don’t care how fast any of my 4 vehicles will do as long as they are comfortable and safe at the speed I need to go on the highway. My rail buggy is for summer only driving out in the country and going to car shows and usually never run more than 55 in it . It is a great handling vehicle as it has 4 wheel disc brakes front and rear sway bars and goes around corners like on rails and stops in a really short distance.
