Hello everyone. My son has a 2003 Vibe GT which he loves. Very well taken care of and 193000 highway miles. It has developed a grind when shifting into 2nd gear and 2nd gear only. It wont grind if he double clutches. We did try changing the gear oil and used full synthetic. No change. My guess would be a bad synchro. Does anyone ave any ideas as to what else I can check? Thanks

Slow down on the shifting and rev match your upshifts, don't just yank it into gear...It happens just when I am down shifting to slow down or to down shift to giver no matter how nice i am to it... but mines doing it in 3rd. I double clutch & its not as bad but it mostly does it BAD when its cold out. Like we are talking -15 or more. (Alberta) she has 130,000km & I think I am the 2nd owner (used when bought in 2006) but my ex drove it pretty hard & i sure don't baby it.I thought the syncro too, but i think i am just going to find a engine to swap it for when she blows up lol

It could be a good learning experience for him. I learned HOW to rev-match using a car were almost all the syncros were bad... especially 3rd and 4th. I got tired of hearing the "crunch" everytime I shifted, couldn't afford to fix it or replace the car, so I learned rev-matching.

I have a 03 GT (180,000) as well and experence the same issue. The more I read the more that I fond that this is known issue with this transmission. To begin with the transmission is noted by mulitple new car reviews to be clunky and not an easy shifter. Given that, a beginner or novice will find themselves inadvertantely damaging the transmission when shifting improperly. The lady that owned my car previous to me did all the damage and now I've learned the quirks of the transmission I know it's limitation and have adjusted my driving habits accordingly. So be careful and practice rev matching to compensate for tough shifts.
