Is is possible to switch in a 5 speed manual for my auto?

Post by THE VIBERATOR »

Hey guys. I've been doing some thinking in the recent months and i've decided to begin my search for a 5 speed manual transmission. The car is in really good shape and i dont want to get rid of it so i've decided that i want to find a new 5 speed manual tranny to switch into my car instead of the current 4 speed auto. First of all is it possible to do?And second of all, where should i look for one? Thanks guys. ANY help is appreciated

anything is possible, however the cost to do a tranny swap is very expensive, so unless the car is entirely paid off, it's better to trade it in for an MT. And why settle for a 5MT? If you're gonna throw around that money, may as well swap a 6MT.you will need a tranny, clutch, wiring, gearbox, ecu and lots of money unless you happen to know how to do it yourself.

Yes it is very possible. The 5 spd manual and the 4 spd auto are very easy to change. You can just bolt it in. There isn't going to be much else to do besides reprogram your ECU. You can not take a tranny from a GT and do that swap. That won't work as easily. If you were to do that, wait until you have a problem with your current tranny. To me it seems pointless to fix something that isn't broken. It will be very very expensive to do. To do a conversion like that would cost about $5000-$5500 at my f-i-l's shop.

All the 6MT does is give you one more intermediate gear, which the GT needs so you can try to stay in lift, but the base 1ZZ doesn't need that.--------------------To swap it you'd need a tranny, w/ clutch, different flywheel, clutch slave cylinder, new brake master cylinder, clutch pedal, new shifter, ECU/PCM, and it looks like you'll also need new drive axles, since the part numbers are different for 5 speed and auto tranny Vibes. You might need to unwire the park/neutral start switch and add a clutch to start switch. As for where to look for one, might be best to find an entire wrecked 5 speed, vibe/matrix so that you'd also have whatever other parts you might discover you need.

heh that is true. I was just researching my options. The 6MT would be difficult to do, and although i love the sound of lift, i've gotta be realistic. Say my car is worth 9 grand. I can buy a pretty decent car with that money. There is a ton of stuff out there. My friend sold his 2001 celica gt for 10 grand so i'd think my car is around that area as of now. I always keep it in good condition. Online, for a 2003 automatic like mine, in good condition it is worth anywhere between 8 grand and 10 grand. The tranny swap, if i do it, would be well down the road. I just wanted to research to see how much it would cost and if it was tough to do. But it looks like the 5MT just bolts right on. Of course i'd need a bunch of other stuff besides the tranny itself, but that goes without saying.

I wouldn't do it unless you have lots of extra time, money and aspirin.

A 6 speed from a 2zz will work. It's been done before,so if you're going to go through all that work, make it worth it.A 6 speed swap may be a winter project for me.

HAH a 6 speed would be nice. Then i can get that LIFT action. But would i need to change anything else exhaust wise? I'm planning on getting an exhaust anyways, so i guess it doesnt matter. My friend from work is getting a 2009 GT. I was so depressed.....i have a lowly 4spd...

what year is yours again? and remember, the new 09 GT's aren't anything special, just the same thing as the base models but with a spiffy new badging and you have tiptronic in the auto. Same power and torque as the base models. man, the 03 VGT was the best model year for the GT imo. I do miss mine sometimes, but then I just drive the Sti hatch and remember that the VGT couldn't run 12's.

Quote, originally posted by bull77 »are you sure?according to the link micbarric posted in http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=30857 , The GT comes only with the 2.4L engine, The base has a 1.8L engine standard, optional to get the same 2.4L of the GT. The 1.8 is rated 132 HP, the 2.4 is 158. I think the 09's have better torque, which can come in handy, sometimes more important.Quote, originally posted by bull77 »what's with all the vibe bashing? She does not seem to understand that people perceive posts like that as Vibe bashing. Now this thread will probably devolve into another subarite/antisubarite debacle.and lift comes from the 2ZZ engine, not from any friggin tranny.

Ahhh right haha got carried away. I have the 03 auto FWD. So that may be some good news. I believe the GT's have the 2.4L. I dont think its 158 hp however. If it is, then thats just sad. A 2.4L making 158 is slow. It seems they downgrade the GT every year now. Whats up with that?

I just looked at the Pontiac website. It appears the GT does come with only 158 horse and 162 torque, on a 5 speed manual or auto tranny and a 2.4L engine. No lift
