Is your Vibe not running right? Do you have a CAI or SRI? Read this!

Post by damronjr »

So, I've been having problems with my car idling all retarded, stalling when I first start it unless I hold the gas until it's warm, etc... So today I decided I was going to race my Vibe, so I needed to get her cleaned up and figured it was about time I cleaned the filter on my CAI as I didn't have a clue when the last time was I did it. OMFG, that thing was Crusted Black! I had to bang it against something a few times to get most of the junk out of it, then sprayed the cleaner, let it soak, sprayed it out with a sprayer hose attachment, then redid the process bc there was so much crap in it! While I was waiting in between processes I decided to blow out the W/I to make sure it was clear, then cleaned out the throttle body a little b/c of all the buildup from the washer fluid, and blew out a little sensor at the bottom of the TB through the opening. After I got everything put back together (keep in in mind I haven't started it in days!) I went to start it up, and low and behold the damn thing started right up like normal and idled with no problem!!! So then I went to the races and found it still didn't clear the P0505 CEL I keep getting, but I think the idle may still be set too high from when I adjusted it to try to get it to idle at like 1200 vice 800 for the H/O alternator to have a full output for the airbag compressors since they always come on when I start the car b/c of an air leak I have yet to find. So, the moral of the story, if you're sitting there trying to figure out when the last time was YOU cleaned your filter, GO DO IT NOW! My Vibe is idling, running, and sounding a LOT better since I did that today!

I usually clean mine about once a year. I drive mostly on paved roads so mine is never too dirty.

Wow! Have you checked/cleaned your MAF and PVC at all? I check my MAF & Air filter at each oil change. I just made it a habit. Have you cleaned out your IAC Valve? It might help your P0505 Cel problem. Is that your only CEL?

It probably wasn't the filter but something else you cleaned if it ran that bad. Take Bluecrush's advice. Maybe that performance mod will actually become just that.

Is that your only CEL?I cleaned the MAF not too long ago, but the filter is such a PITA to get to, I was too lazy to clean it. I haven't taken the time yet to disassemble the TB and accessories to clean all that yet. I did clean the piece that is up on top of the engine (whatever that valve is). I'm not sure which is which, but a lot of the stuff doesn't want to come apart and I just haven't taken the time to get it all apart. I want to switch out my CAI for a SRI so it will be more accessible and less likely to cause hydrolock. I did try to clean the filter fairly often, and it hasn't been TOO long since I last cleaned it, but with it being where it is, with holes in front of (vent holes in the psychovibe bumper) and behind it (giant gaping hole in the fender liner!), it seems to take lot of crap in! And the P0505 is the only CEP I get, and I get it fairly regularly even after resetting it with my OBDII reader.

Thanks for the pic,I know where it goes now..Man,you have a lot of wires and stuff. My compartment isn't near as cramped as your. That's weird about your filter.Guess you should make a point and check it every 6 months then.

I was thinking,(Oh no)maybe you're running too much water injection, and that's running down to the filter and causing that crusty build up.Did you actually tune the w/i or set it up by eye.

He had a similar set-up, and set it to only come on after a certain rpm. It wasn't going down to the filter, the build-up of the washer fluid (W/I) was in the opening of the TB and the rubber adapter piece btwn the CAI and TB.

Funny. My Injen filter looks exactly like yours - with the dent and jagged bits and everything. And then once cleaned, it looks so spiffy!Though I didn't specifically notice any performance improvement, I think I'm going to check out the sensor.

Just got the P0505 cel again for the first time in forever, not sure what cleared/caused it before, wasn't even sure what it was, that's how I found my own thread! lol Guess I better get out there and figure it out again! I think it might have something to do with my idle or air intake system somewhere. Wasn't someone selling a TB with sensors on here not long ago?!? Looks like it's time for more searching! lol
