FWD Base = Regular gas. That's the cheaper way to go.

I was shopping for basic transportation (Corolla), when we happened across the Vibe. We were unhappy with the cost of the Corrolla, but while at the Toyota dealership we were very impressed with the Matrix, unfortunatly it was even more $$$. On the way home we saw a Vibe at the Pontiac dealership and thouhght what the heck, it won't hurt to check it out. Well they had a"weekend special" price on a auto base for less than a Corolla. I would have prefered a manual trans, but we are extremely pleased with our Vibe, it is alot more than the basic transportation we set out to buy at a reasonable price. GT model would have been $3k more + premium fuel for 200k miles.
Base Two Tone Satellite, Auto, & Pwr Pkg....my current commuting car.
Join the dark side and splurge for the GT . Keep in mind that you will lose a few HP on the AWD. If those are your choices, go with a 5-spd Base with a good set of winter tires when the snow falls.

2003 GT...pondering putting a turbo/sc on it anyway, since I live at 5300', with frequent sojourns up to 6300-8500', and I can "boost" it back to sea level performance specs without internal mods... (In aircraft engines, it's called "Turbo-Normalizing" - and it's good for keeping sealevel performance up to about 22,000'...)

And the gas mileage... *huge grin*Even with my lead foot, and a *serious* liking for the 6000RPM kick in the pants, I still got 28.6 MPG out of my first full tank of gas on my "new to me" '03 GT with 17k on the clock.
2005 Base Vibe in Fusion. Pondered the GT but performance on the base was adequate enough so Gas mileage won out over the GT. At 35,000 miles per year it adds up fast.
2004 Base, Auto. First non-V-8 I have had since 1987...but I love the damn thing. Learning from all the other Vibe/Matrix owners. For example, the CAI IS trully the ticket for an easy, realtively inexpensive mod. Did mine, an Injen, last weekend and have not been able to keep my foot off the loud pedal since!
I was shopping for a Base FWD, but I got a steal on the AWD....1st AWD car I've ever had....on Gran Turismo the AWD cars are hard to beat....and so far, I've discovered that AWD is the way to go in real life too......I just want 50~75 more HP........

'05 Silver Vibe w/5 spd manual.Almost went for the GT, but didn't like the bottom end torque (there lackoff). I wanted the Base with a Supercharger (and was ready to pay for it), but was told by my dealer the current '04 run of superchargers would not work because of the new electronic throttlebody in the '05's. I was bummed.
