What is the bottom blank for in the AC Control in the AC/Radio Bezel For?

I have a 2005 Pontiac Vibe and would like to install a switch for something and do it in a neat way. I see that on my Vibe there is a blank filling in the cutout on the AC Control/Radio bezel.

I imagine that this blank is removed and replaced with something like a switch for some optional or other model. If it is used for a switch, I could just get a hold of one and it would be a very stock looking install.

Does anyone have any ideas what this blank and the hole it fills there for?

Here is a picture of what the radio bezel looks like out of a Matrix. It's one of the quirks of the Vibe, the GM radio has a clock so there was no need for a separate clock.
