My Vibe's new companion & 2000th post!

Post by tpollauf »

OK, so I took the plunge and replaced my 22 year old 1992 F-150. They (GM) really twisted my arm PLUS I wanted to get what I WANTED at the lowest possible price. Consider my timing (MSRP went up over $2000 in just two months), I accomplished all of that and I'm very pleased. Below is the newest GM member to join our Pontiac fleet. 2014 Chevy Silverado Double Cab, LTZ Z71 4x4 in Cobalt Blue metallic. Dealer allowed me to use supplier pricing (thanks Honeywell), $1000 cash off for everybody, and $3000 more off thanks to my GM card earnings. Total of $6500 off of a $43400 (OUCH) MSRP ....! The wife will be working in lower Michigan a good part of the winter so I decided to get another snow worthy vehicle & besides I was itching to get my hands on one of these totally redesigned trucks :D

Nice! Look forward to hearing if all the redesigned features live up to expectation.
Any thoughts on preparing the new ride for its winter battle against the sea of salt that DOT will be generously applying to the roadways?

Very nice! I like the new Silverados. So will your wife be driving this through the winter? Also, it looks like you've balanced out the red-blue ratio in your household!

Nice, Tim! I was thinking the same thing, two red, and now two blue. Now you need some white for an all American fleet! Congrats!

Now Nick ..... it took me close to five years to save up for the truck. That Vette (extremely nice BTW) will put me in my grave by the time I save enough $$$ to purchase it. Besides as I age, and we all hate to admit it, it gets a bit more uncomfortable stooping down to get into a car. Nice thoughts anyways ;)

It's too bad that nobody down here in the states offer what our Canadian friends offer for a GOOD rustproofing system. http://www.krown.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; The Krown franchises I think are great and a good way to keep the underside of the cars corrosion free. Depending on how often it is driven and in what weather conditions, I may eventually do something. A friend of mine has a lift that I can use anytime and I just may wait a year to see what damage (if any) gets done and then come up with a plan for future years.

Happy 2000th post and congrats on the new truck! Ft. Wayne built perhaps? 8-) Saw a truckload of them on the highway today and there was one like yours that caught eye.

Is that Blue Topaz metallic? Looks like what is on my Sonic. It's a beautiful color, just be warned the birds really enjoy it for some reason.

Nice ride!

Be sure not to use those Goodyear SR-A's in winter, they are just as useless as the RS-A's that came on vibes... Even with 4wd.

Nice!

Related to ColonelPanic's post, I don't know if long-time GenViber Scherry2 (Sheldon Cherry) has retired by now, but he worked at the Ft. Wayne truck plant.

I just keep wondering how on earth are the manufacturers going to make behemoths like this average 28.8mpg in 2016, 4 cyl engines and carbon fiber?

That's fleet-average MPG. It doesn't mean the mainstream pickups, namely Silverado, will need to get nearly 30mpg. It means the harmonic mean of the fuel economy of GM's "trucks" must be 28.8, or something like that. eg, 23mpg Silverado, 25mpg Tahoe, 30mpg HHR. The CAFE rating would be the number of vehicles (3) over the reciprocals of the fuel economies added together. Like:

3/ (1/25) + (1/23) + (1/30) = 25.6mpg.

As opposed to 23+25+30 divided by three = 24.3mpg.

So in reality, trucks like this need to average 22mpg by 2024. Rather realistic, if you ask me.

But carbon fiber implemented in the average car is going to be cool!

Yes to both questions. I like the fact that it's final assembly took place just two hours to my southwest from Toledo ;) I mis-quoted the color in the original post. I stated the GMC color and not the Chevy color. It is indeed Blue Topaz metallic (very sharp) until the birds eye it up :o

We'll see how they perform this winter Ryan. I shouldn't have nearly the amount of snow or bad driving days that you encounter up there in Canada. Also we don't nearly put on the amount of miles as many of you others do so I'm not too concerned about the "BadYear" tires just yet :x

Thanks Carrie. Yeah that color is my second favorite .... to RED anyways

That's a great looking truck. I was mighty impressed by them at the car show I last went to.

Gorgeous! We'd like to have the very same truck, but... I have this thing about not having a vehicle loan that is higher than my mortgage. Maybe in a few years. Also hubby was bummed to learn they are not offered in manual.

Do you have any pictures of your F150? I believe you said it was in great shape and low mileage...

Also, I can see your Honeywell van. I still remember that morning we met in Toledo, and confusing you with my auto-start. Doing that was the best introduction ever.

I don't have any recent ones BUT it is parked out at my dads place (he has 19 acres ... lots of room) and will get used for hauling, working, etc. The next time I'm out there I'll take a snapshot of it. I'm keeping it for now for a couple of reasons.

ONE: They have Corey, my 19 yr old son listed as the primary driver on it so he gets away with ridiculously LOW insurance rates ( we're talking $300-$350 for the year!).
TWO: At just under 58,000 original miles there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with it and is worth so much more that the KBB value of $2000 or so.
THREE: It has the inline 300 6-cylinder and a 5-speed manual :D You can't get any manuals any more in new trucks, so I'm keeping it!

Excellent reason to keep it. I have my daughter insured on my 87 Mustang, eventhough it is not even running, and it is MUCH cheaper that way. I pay like $57 a month for her. If I dropped the coverage, my insurance would go UP about $100 a month since she would have to be put on my Vibe or the Equinox. My agent even told me it would be cheaper to buy a cheap car and insure it for my kids even if they never drive it, since then they would be covered on all the vehicles. I might do that if I end up restoring the Mustang and get collector insurance on it.

My parents have done that for me too (insurance-wise) since I started driving in 2000. I was always rated on our 1994 Pontiac Sunbird LE Sedan even when I wasn't driving it. It's nice when you have an insurance agent whom you really trust and when they tell you how to do things to get the lowest possible rates :P!
