Hello, is there a moderator out there?

Post by beemerphile1 »

This spam is ridiculous. The spammers have virtually shut down the forum.

Do they really think they will sell their crap? I guess somebody must buy it or the spammers would find a different job.

Oh BTW, my Vibe is running great!

EDIT; Funny, the forum automatically deletes the word c-r-a-p but allows all the spam.

Working on it. I've banned a few and am cleaning up posts as I go.

Can we suspend posting privileges for new registrations?

Believe me, if I had that power, I'd do it.

Thank you, I realize moderating is typically a difficult and thankless job.

It is, but when you get the chance to clean up a big problem like this to help the whole board... it's kind of self-thanking. :)
As far as I can tell, everything should be taken care of... for now.

One thing I've always wondered...when I'm on it's usually my midnight and when I look too see who else is online, it's always just me and the Bots. It knows that they are because there's the word (Bot) so why does it let them post if it knows they're bots?

The bots are actually not the ones doing the posting. They're ad bots, search engine index bots, etc. They're known bots because they're allowed by the software. phpBB also allows bots to be blocked if you don't want the search spiders crawling through your site (I usually block them from my sites).

Millster - it's not a "thankless job". THANK YOU!!!
And as long as I don't get a virus from them it is not near as annoying as the almost daily robo-calls I get from "Rachel at cardholder services". One would think that if the FBI can trace the e-mails from Paula Broadwell to Jill Kelley that finding Rachel and her coherts would not be that big of a deal.

I appreciate you. Man, who the heck wants to buy watches from some idiots that are spamming up your favorite sites?

Thank you, Jake! As I've said before it's all worth it to help the members around here.
I agree about the robo-calls. Thankfully that's where my ISP provided VOIP service and my Android phone have come in very handy. Preemptive blocking comes in very handy.

I bring good news! I was able to reach Mike very quickly by email and he made a change to the registration process which should at least slow our attackers down significantly.
So once again, a HUGE thank you to MKowdley, our ever-helpful admin for not only keeping this site running for so many years but also for saving us from the evil spam hoard!

Thanks folks. It does mean a lot to "hear" the words of appreciation, but you all should know that it wouldn't be possible without the wonderful membership of this site. I've been very fortunate to watch this site grow over the years and while we've had some trying times it has always been great fun. I've met a lot of good friends here and hope to meet a few more now that I'm back around. Sadly, my Vibe has been gone for a while but my wife brought a Matrix into my life so I may still have some input in addition to my moderator duties.
The members are the sites lifeblood and we have a very strong membership here. I'm proud to say I'm a moderator at Genvibe.com and am so thrilled to see it as active as it is so many years after its inception. To all of the members and posters (except the spammers), keep up the good work! :D

I try to do my part as far as reporting obvious spam posts as soon as I see them. Most times I find that the post has already been reported, so it's nice to know I'm not the only one keeping an eye out for the spammers.

Definitely a huge thank you to millister, mkowdley and all the rest of the GenVibe mods for keeping our beloved forum up and running as smoothly as they possibly can! You guys and gals rock !

They're coming in faster than I can report them. Are there just more spam bots, or is there something different with the forum?

Sure. It's just a phantom grey XR, but I did just spend a couple of weekends doing body work on some deep scratches and nicks so it shines better than when it was new. I'll get it parked in The Garage.

As far as the spammers go, what we're running into right now is the remnant of the mass registration that occurred earlier in the week but who did not start spamming us right away. The current spammers registered yesterday before Mike instituted the registration change and are just now starting to post. Between Arcsvibe and I, we have a majority of them cleaned up but I'll do some research to make sure they are all gone.
