Vibe OnStar renewal fee - negotiable?

Post by jake75 »

In a couple months I am going to have to decide whether to rennew OnStar. Franlky, for how little we drive, $200 a year (about $17 a month) doesn't make sense. Anyone have any luck getting a lower rate?

Something to think about.... I always thought that if I locked my keys in the car, or it got stolen then I would just call OnStar and renew then.I heard third hand - so don't hold me to this - that if you are not a subscriber and your airbag goes off they will still call the car and send emergency vehicles if needed.

I didn't renew mine. They did keep sending me offers for discounts, but I never even used the included minutes for their phone service.

I did call OnStar yesterday... Cost is $18.99 per month or $199.99 for 1 yr subscription.

I found the OnStar phone useless... when driving at highway speeds the people on the other end couldn't hear anything, weather they were on a cell or landline! And since half the systems OnStar has don't work for the Vibe, I don't see the point in it!

I never gave them my credit card, so they could not automatically bill me after my year was up. What is funny is that my one year has expired, yet my green light is still on. Isn't that light supposed to go out when you terminate your service with on star?

I've had mine 3 yrs now. Every year I've been able to get a slight discount and at least 60 free minutes, since the Vibe doesn't get all the On*Star features. Not this year. They wouldn't budge, PLUS they no longer include ANY minutes (it used to be at least 30) with the renewal. I called BS on that, but in the end I did renew, but this is probably the last time. It's basically the new GM is like the old GM, just a lot greedier.

Yes, like everything these days, it is negotiable. Here's a couple of paths - 1st one was mine on our other GM vehicle (in July) -Used the 1-877-616-0577 number from my email renewal notice. Asked for the Safe & Sound $148/yr renewal fee that I've seen other people on my on-line forum get. (You can also renew monthly @ $12.95). They said "no problem".orCall the main OnStar number 1.888.466.7827, wade thru the prompts & indicate you wish to cancel. Ask for the same deal.Others on that forum who still use the Onstar for phone service have also gotten 100 free minutes + 2 free addl months of service.

Agree w/ smash. I renewed both our cars last August for $148/yr(each). OnStar will work w/ you rather than have you drop them.Good luck,Bob

Yep, I did the same as smash.....$148.I got 2 free months and an additional 100 minutes on the phone too for free..so $148 for 14 months and 100 free phone minutes. Came out to like $12.50/mo...if you take the two extra months into consideration it works out to @10.57/mo.

I saved $199 a year by not renewing. Never used any feature half of which doesn't work with the vibe anyway.

I have never renewed mine either. Waste of money, until you need it I guess. I figure I got along without it for a long time...

On Star lights

Post by Caretaker »

For those of you who let your On-star lapse, can you confirm that the green lights go out on the rear view mirror? Mine are still on despite my ending my free service a month ago. I thought the lights went out when the service ends. And yes, my credit card was not on file, so there is no way they could be running up a bill without my authorization.

I'm torn with this onstar renewal. Ours isn't up for another 8-9 months. My wife wants me to keep it but I'm not convinced the additional cost is worth it. If I didn't have a cell phone it might be a no brainer. That said, I think the technology is incredibly cool. If I could get a diagnostic check I would've been all over keeping it

I received the discounted $149 rate and renewed my wife's Vue the last two times. The first year that I renewed, she complained. After using some of the features (the Vue does not have the diagonistics either), she does not mind my last renewal. My wife or daughter are the only two drivers of the vehicle. I put the $149 as "piece of mind" insurance, and cut out coffee from Tim Horton's 100 times to cover the cost.

I gotta say I was thinking about dropping it.. but I got sideswiped and rear ended by the same driver in a delivery Ford 350 van. before the other driver could say anything ONSTAR dispatched police and rescue to the scene. The cops were there in 3 minutesIt's worth it.

I figured that if I don't have a signal on my cell, I might with Onstar. + Roadside Assistance and the peace-of-mind knowing that someone always has your back!!!
