Crap, we need to get the Vibe's registration renewed, it expires tomorrow. Thankfully the Indiana BMV has that rockin' self service terminal, no human interaction required. I renewed mine online and got $5 knocked off. I have the awful looking regular plate on mine since it's expensive enough as it is, and I don't feel like adding $20. Kari does have a specialty plate on hers though.'03 Vibe:21.05 state plate fee20.00 group fee for the specialty plate106.00 county excise tax-53.00 excise tax cut$94.05'06 Hyundai Accent21.05 state plate fee269.00 county excise tax-134.00 county excise tax cut-5.00 renew via internets$151.05

Now I can see where you got your screen name. I feel sorry for you and Damron. Thought mine was pricey but I guess it isn't *too* bad. It was $185 last year and I think a bit over 200 before that. If only that dropped as quickly as a car's book value plummets. Waiting to see a Tennessee GenViber get on here and brag about their $18 or whatever annual registration bills.

VIA INTERNETOHIO - Franklin CountyState License Fee 31.00County Tax 20.00Service Fee 3.50Postage 0,36Total $54.86That's for stickers to apply to existing plates. If for some reason you need to replace the metal plates (front and back in Ohio) I think it is an extra $5.00.Most Ohio counties have a $20 tax - is used to replace bridges mostly.I suppose you might save the 0.36 postage if you opted to stand in line at a BMV Agency but with the 2% rebate I get on my Schwab Visa I save $1.10 anyway. I think the agencies only take checks and cash. There are extra charges for Vanity Plates - I'm not into that. I wrote to the Gov and suggested that to help cover our deficit the state auction off the real vanity plates - those with 3 digits/numbers total or less. There is someone in the neighborhood that has a license plate that is just "V". Pretty cool - I am sure some rich person might pay a lot to have a license plate consisting of just one letter. But that would tick off many people who have such plates and donate a lot of campaign money so I am sure the legislature would not approve of it.Ohio has the best legislature money can buy and that happens day in and day out.

what the crap? I thought we had it expensive here.$74/year for a 1-year plate validation sticker$30 for an emissions test every 2 yearsThough if you live in the city of Toronto, there's apparently some lameass tax you have to pay when you renew. Fortunately I don't live in that garbagehole of a city (literally :D) so it's just the above listed.

Oh - I forgot. In Ohio to license a vehicle you also have to swear on a stack of Bibles, or the Koran, or the Mexican flag etc. that you have liability insurance. Of course a lot of people lie. The State audits about 2% to verify this. So there is a 98% chance of getting away with this.

That's the price of big government. They have to pay for all those programs somehow. In Va we have to pay property taxes on our vehicles every year based on their value. Bid incentive to buy a new car. If you don't pay the tax, you can't register your vehicle.

It was reduced to the current rate, then our wise legislature decided that the commonwealth couldn't do without the revenue. So, the phase out was phased out. Funny thing is that they raised our sales tax to compensate for the lower auto pp tax. The good thing is that at 100,000 miles there is a high milage discount that I should be eligable for next year. By then they will probably invent some sort of fine for me for driving too much and contributing to global warming.

I just renewed my license plate sticker earlier this month. It was $79.00 for the sticker and it's good for one year. This was for a regular license plate. Personal and vanity license plates are a little more, but still less than $100.00. In Illinois you cannot renew your license plate sticker without having proof of insurance. You have to fill out your policy #, etc. on the paper that you take to the DMV. The sticker is the only thing we have to pay for here. We live in the country so we don't have emissions or anything like that. We used to have city stickers but too many people were not buying them so they did away with that idea.

British Columbia (ICBC - gov't monopoly)Licence fee: $53Regestration fee: $18There are more depending on weather you get less than a year (Short term ins. fee + Short term ins. premium), if it's a first time regestration (New plate fee + Enrollment fee), if you live in the lower mainland/Vancouver area (Air Care), and then of course there's how long you've been driving and weather or not you've had at-fault accidents to determing your discount or surcharge (+205% to -43% http://www.icbc.com/autoplan-i...frag_ and that's on your whole insurance premium, not just the extra fees... $4000 to insure a car for a year is not unheard of... ) I pay $1181 per year for the vibe, $1000000 liab., Collision, Comprehensive and all this also depends on where you live down to the postal code...Speeding tix and such don't have an effect on the rate you pay but claims against your insurance does..... drive safe people.

It's $34.50 to renew existing tags, plus up to $20 in local tax depending on your county. There's I think there's a very slight discount for getting a two-year registration. If you need new plates, there's a charge for the plates themselves of about $6, IIRC.I think I paid about $105 total for two years. After 25 years, you can get "Historical Plates" that no longer require renewal fees. I guess they figure you've paid enough on the car by that point.

From OHIO BMV Webstite"HISTORICAL PLATES - These plates may be issued to any Ohio motorist. The vehicle must be 25 years of age or older. It is a collector's vehicle used in participation in club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, but NOT for general transportation."So if you are using a 25+ year old car for general transportation you need to have regular plates.

That's true, although I'm not sure how they'd enforce that, exactly. I see historical plates around town occasionally where it appears the owners are using the cars for at least some limited general transportation (i.e. going out to eat on the weekend)

But I doubt many owners of such vehicles put many mile son them.I see more apparent misuse of dealer plates. I regularly observe two cars parked in a local dealer's driveway with dealer plates. I guess driving nearly new luxury cars is just another untaxed perk.

I forget how Michigan determines annual registration fees. Think we use a sliding scale. For my '04 base Vibe:In 2009 - $68.00In 2008 - $68.00In 2007 - $75.00Don't remember 2006 and earlier off handPrice the same whether doing it online (need to have PIN # on renewal form), in person, or by mail. $10 late charge if you renew after expiration date (your b'day).

OHIO plates used to expire the same time for everyone. That way the police would easily know if a plate was expired. To even out the demand I think Ohio staggered the dates by month. My recollection is that they screwed most of us out of some money at that time due to the way the fee for the partial year was calculated. This may have occurred at the same time stickers for existing plates were used instead of getting all new plates every year. Then Ohio went to date of birth - depending on your birthdate (1st of the month to end of the month) you got screwed out of up to 1/12th of the renewal fee because of a change in when you had to get plates renewed. You might have only got 11 months of use from the prior year's plates.
