My Vibe just got sold, but...

Post by Sputnik »

So the dealer where I got my Rogue just phoned. They sold my Vibe, but he wants maitenance records for it if I have any. Why would they want this, and why wouldn't they have asked for them when I traded it in, in the first place?

Probably because the buyer asked for them. I don't have complete records for mine either. I probably kept a receipt here and there, but otherwise, nothing.

Keeping service records for your vehicle does serve a purpose. For example; I have a 2004 VW Jetta, 90k. When I get the oil changed (I only take it somewhere cuz I don't like doing it myself) the service place always tells me that my transmission fluid is full. I know they are full of crap. The only way to check the transmission fluid in a VW/Audi is to drain it. There is no dipstick in the engine compartment. So, when my transmission goes out, since I have documentation stating the the fluid is full, and has been for years, it will not be my responsibility to pay for the repair.

Keeping motor vehicle maintenance records/receipts would be a good 2008 New Year's Resolution. I have a 3 ring binder for that - but at a minimum you could just have an envelope in the glove box to put them in. Those records proving tire rotations got me a set of 4 repalcement tires when my Conti's were badly cupped at 19,000 miles. (I had to pay about $80 for mounting and balancing). It could also help you get a goodwill repair if the engine blows 1 mile beyond the warranty if you can prove oil was changed regularly.

Thats interesting that they didn't ask for the records when you traded in the car. Although there is really no reason for them to have the records since they should change all the fluids anyway before they sell it to someone. How much did they give you for the trade-in, if you don't mind me asking. If you don't want to post thats fine too. It would be interesting to know how much they are marking it up.Good Luck with the new car

They are marking it up by about $3K.Apparently the new owners wanted to know what repairs (none!) had been done. I told him I have records that show oil changes mostly and one for the tune up/brakes done in the summer. So I don't have to provide any papers. I'm guessing they are curious as to why so little km on it for a 5 year old car.

Hon has a (used) 2000 jetta. (100k mi) The tranny *runs like crap*. Not being able to check the fluid sucks...it must be taken to the dealer where you get charged an arm, a leg, and your first born to service it!

That's a smart buyer. Always good to check up on the car if you can.I'm thankful that nobody asked for my Vibe's service records, I didn't really keep any of 'em! They were on MyGMLink account for the most part if I absolutely needed 'em.I changed that on its replacement... I have a 3-ring binder with every single invoice in a plastic page protector and have saved every receipt. It may be worth it to me or some other person in the future.

I'm going to keep all my Rogue ones. I think I just figured since its a lease and wasn't sure I was going to keep it at the time, why bother? But I am buying the Rogue so I will keep all docs for it.

Not being able to check the fluid on a VW isn't as bad as you would think. VW will warranty the tranny for the life of the vehicle as long as it isn't leaking. If the tranny is leaking it needs to be serviced. You can find that info on the VW website.

I don't think it's leaking, it just has trouble getting up the hill, and when it does shift, big BANG!

If the tranny isn't leaking at all, VW should warranty it (I'm speaking of course certain model years, I don't know how long they have had that warranty).

I've got a few envelopes I keep in the car.Service - anything I purchased from the dealer; fluids, filters, wiper inserts, etc.Maintenance - Any work that was done by a dealer or shop if need be. Also includes tires.Oil - When I used to get them done by the shopI had them for the Civic and when I handed the guy who bought it from me the folder, he was shocked I had oil change resets back to the first one I got, all organized by date.

Maintenance records

Post by joatmon »

I ran though the warranty on the Vibe so fast I didn't keep any proof of maintenance. Not even oil changes, I just use the second trip meter to track miles between changes. Bigger repairs and maintenance stuff I'll post here about it. It would be pretty funny if whoever bought Sputnik shows up here, incredulous that the car had zero mods done to it, asking for advice on how to rice it to the max.

Don't they have a website like Carfax in Canada? We bought a 96 Pathifinder and the dealer gave us a Carfax history report when we bought it. It had every oil change, car registration, change of owenership and location even a body shop visit.

One thing to note with Carfax it only shows things that have gone through police, DMVs, or insurance. There are a few body shops that are in the system that will update based no VIN.But if you are in a small accident and the car is taken to some local guy or work done by oneself or something, then it will not show up. But that is a rare case I guess.

So my latest wreck that went through Progressive should show up. Speaking of the wreck I get my car back this Friday. Hooray! no more car pooling. There has been too much snow on the roads for me to ride my motorcycle. So it will be nice to get the Vibe back.
